B. The landscape contractor must make every effort to install plant material
within these dates. When delays in operation carry the work beyond the
dates, or when conditions are such that satisfactory results are not
likely to be obtained, work shall be stopped and shall be resumed only
when conditions are favorable again or when approved alternate or corrective
measures and procedures have been put into effect as authorized by the
Engineer/Architect or Owner.
C. Installation of plants during any other period of time, other than that
specified, shall be at the responsibility of the landscape contractor. '
3.02 LAYOUT AND SPACING
A. Stake locations of trees and shrubs and outline of planting areas as

Architect reserves right to interchange or shift plant locations prior
tb planting.
3,03 PLANTING PROCEDURE
A. Unless otherwise specified, all plants shall be planted in pits, centered,
and set on a minimum of six inches (6") of prepared soil compacted to
such a depth that the finished grade level at the plant after settlement,
will be the same as that at which the plant was grown. They shall be
1
planted upright and faced to give the best appearance or relationship to
adjacent structures. No burlap shall be pulled out from under balls.
Platform, wire and surplus binding from top and sides of the balls shall
be removed. Roots shall be spread in their normal position. All broken
or frayed roots shall be cut off cleanly. Topsoil or prepared soil shall
be placed and compacted carefully to avoid injury to roots and to fill
all voids. When the hole is nearly filled, add water as necessary to
allow it to soak away. Fill the hole to finished grade; and form a
shallow saucer around each plant by placing a ridge of topsoil around the
edge of each pit. After the ground settles, additional soil shall be
filled in to the level of the finished grade. -
B. Circular- pits with vertical sides shall be excavated for all plants
except for hedge and plants specifically designated on the Plans to be
planted in beds.. Diameter of pits for trees and "B&B" shrubs and vines
shall be at least two feet (2') greater than the diameter of the ball or

vines shall be at least one foot (1' ) greater than the spread of roots.
The depth of pits for trees, shrubs and vines shall be enough to ac-
. commodate the ball or roots when the plant is set to finished grade
allowing for a minimum of six inches (6") of prepared soil compacted in
the bottom of the pit.
•
C. Ground Cover Beds: Ground cover shall be planted in beds having a
minimum depth of twelve inches (12") . The topsoil or prepared soil used
shall be thoroughly mixed with one-third (1/3) peat and lightly
Plants shall be evenly spaced, as specified, in staggered rows and set to
finished grade level after settlement. The beds shall then- be mulched
with compost, peat, or as .specified on the Drawings.
• D. Trees shall be supported immediately after planting. All trees six
inches (6") and over in trunk diameter shall be guyed and wrapped.
Smaller trees shall be staked. Wires shall be encased in hose to prevent
• direct contact with the bark of the tree and shall be placed around the
trunk in a' single loop.
E. Wires shall be tightened and kept taught by twisting the strands together.
F. Guying shall be.done with three guys spaced equally about each tree. Each
guy shall consist of two strands of wire attached to the tree trunk at an
angle of about 60 degrees at about two-fifths (2/5) of the height of the
tree and anchored at the ground either to notched stakes which have been
driven into the ground at an angle away from the tree so that the tops of
the anchor stakes are below finished grade or (where underground utilities
are within four feet (4' ) of finished grade) to deadmen placed at least
three feet (3' ) below finished grade.
G. A wood or metal flag shall be secured to each guy twelve (12) or eighteen
(18) inches above the ground.
•
•
H. Stakes shall be equally spaced about each tree and the end treated with wood
preservative and shall be driven at a slight angle and tightened to a
vertical position in the ground to a depth of 2-1/2 to 3 feet in such a
manner as not to injure the ball or other roots. Trees shall be
fastened to each stake at a height of about five feet (5' ) by means of
two strands of wire. Stakes shall be uniform in height and placed according
to the diameter of the tree trunk, as follows:
1. 3 to 6 inches - Guyed
2. 2 to 3 inches - 2 Stakes
" 3. 2 inches or less - 1 Stake
I. Promptly after planting, the trunks of all deciduous trees shall be wrapped
spirally from the groundline to the height of the first branch. All
wrapping shall be neat and snug and the material shall be held in place
by a suitable cord.
J., All plants shall be mulched with a two inch (2") layer of shredded bark
immediately after, planting. This mulch shall entirely cover the area of
the planting pit, bed, or saucer around each plant.
3.03 PRUNING AND REPAIR -
A. Upon completion of the work under this contract, all trees and shrubs --)
shall- have been pruned' and any injuries repaired. The amount of pruning
shall be limited to the minimum necessary to remove dead or injured twigs
and branches and to compensate for the loss of roots as a result of
transplanting operations. Pruning shall be done in such a -manner as not
