ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLANNING AND STRATEGY
Hamilton County Alliance: Continue to work with leaders of the Hamilton County
Alliance on opportunities for working together on a variety of economic
development and marketing projects; met with Christy Ellison Lugo, vice
president of the Hamilton County Alliance and Nancy Heck to discuss strategies to
bring more business and jobs to the county and the city of Carmel; shared
information regarding business interests looking to relocate in Carmel or
Hamilton County. This is an ongoing effort.
Tourism Bureau: Continue to work with officials at Hamilton County Convention
and Visitors Bureau —now renamed Visit Hamilton County— on initiatives
designed to target specific markets for potential tourism in the county and city of
Carmel. Corresponded with Brenda Myers for research for information request
from city of Carmel. This will be an ongoing effort.
Hamilton County Tactical Economic Development Group: Continue to work with
other economic development leaders from throughout the county to discuss
strategies to market ourselves for future economic development initiatives.
Helped with research and shared contacts from potential business leads. This will
be an ongoing effort.
Hamilton County Economic Development Group: Helped plan and present
monthly meeting of this group at The Palladium. Worked with Carmel city staff on
materials shared among professionals from each community in the county. This is
an ongoing effort.
Media and Press Conferences: Assisted Carmel city staff with various media
relations, press conferences and news releases. Included among these were
winter weather emergency releases, national recognition for Carmel's leadership
in climate efforts and local arts grants. Helped arrange numerous interviews with
journalists from around the nation, including newspapers, radio stations, websites
and various trade publications. Specifically, one wide-ranging interview session
concerning the ways in which mayors use federal Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) programs to improve energy efficiency and
lower carbon emissions led to stories that kept Carmel in the national spotlight
for its leadership in this area. Also helped with research and review for upcoming
press conference regarding a major jobs announcement; assisted with U.S. 31
project communications efforts.
Specific Economic Development Projects: Met with Carmel City Center staff to
discuss new marketing efforts aimed at attracting new businesses and jobs to the
city; Continued to work with Mayor Brainard on a specific project to reach out to
a major corporation that has expressed an interest in possibly establishing a
presence in Carmel.
SelectUSA: Continued to work, under the direction of the Mayor, with SelectUSA
on opportunities to market the city of Carmel. Corresponded with representatives
in Mumbai and Venice about potential opportunities to market the city abroad.
Cultural ID project: Met with the Department of Community Services to kick off
long range plan to identify opportunities to market the city of Carmel in a variety
of ways. This is an ongoing project.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Winter weather: Assisted City staff with gathering and disseminating reports from
various emergency agencies and the city street department to keep the public
informed of Carmel's efforts during more winter weather, specifically a storm that
hit the area in early February.
Social media: Continued to work with City staff on various social media issues.
Helped publicize important information of interest to the City and its residents.
Community Relations: Assisted the Department of Community Relations and
Economic Development as needed for a variety of tasks including working with
local, state and national media; responding to requests from trade publications
and websites seeking information on various city initiatives.
American Songbook: Continued to work with the Center for the Performing Arts
and American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition, to plan and discuss
strategy to help publicize Michael Feinstien's shows here and around the country.
Began exploring an opportunity involving radio. This is part of an ongoing effort to
bring more national attention to the American Songbook competition scheduled
to take place in various locations around the country and then the finals in
Carmel.
Research and writing: Under the direction of the Mayor, research was done on a
variety of informational topics, businesses and trade associations who have
approached the city with opportunities for economic development or to
showcase the city to a broad national audience. Among them: ICLEI and the
Resilient Communities for America Campaign; central Indiana regional transit
groups; various video projects related to development; "safest suburb in
America" news release; Carmel Green Initiative; worked with city financial
advisors to compile materials to be used for economic development marketing
and communications; International Economic Development Council
correspondence and research; invitation to participate in Growing Sustainable
Communities Conference in Iowa this fall; invitation to join China Trade'Council
advisory board.
Corporate HQ's— Research and review extensive list of corporate headquarters
for major companies based out of Carmel.
City web site: Continued working to update the city's website. This is an ongoing
effort. Special emphasis placed on areas of interest to outside business entities
exploring options to relocate; various quality of life elements.
