We are in agreement that the best option is to remove the brick soldier around the perimeter of the tower and the painted tile and replace all with brick to match. From: Keesling, Rachel M [mailto:rkeeslin@carmel.in.ROV] { ^ Sent: Monday,June 23, 2014 4:37 PM To: 'Carol Landing' Cc: Matt Bruggeman; Conn, Angelina V Subject: RE: Tilted Kilt restaurat Carmel IN Hi Carol and Matt, I think Angie summed everything up pretty well with her email below. eut to go into more detail: 3 main identification signs are allowed for this building due to a variance from 2001. That variance was for the number of signs, so the size of the signs will still have to fit the Sign Ordinance requirements. With that said, I think the best option would be to remove the middle row of soldier course bricks in order to create a decent size sign band/spandrel panel area for your sign to be placed on the entry element. I also know there are two different materials there, a tile and a brick. Maybe this is an opportunity to replace the tile with brick to create a seamless look, and thus removing the issue of crossing over different architectural features. We would want to see the same treatment applied to all sides of this feature bump out/entrance. Please see the attached PDF that I have marked up. If you did not want to modify the building fasade, a few options are to reduce the size of the wall sign to fit the requirements, or perhaps use the gold Gemini letters here. They look very nice and have a simple straight line that would work well with the small sign band area. You could also move away from the entry element and have a sign over the window area on the north elevation. Ttiis would require removing some of the goose neck lights, but it could make for a nice sign band area. As Angie stated, we are not in favor of the cabinet style sign proposed. The individual letters in the fiorizontal format is what we would like to see installed here. The Pub and Eatery portion of the sign should also be individual letters, to match the main sign. We would be ok with a raceway format,or installed directly to the building fascia. I have gone through the brandingmanual and the wall sign formats are generally ok, but the sizes are too big.The smallest wail sign width shownis 13' 7.25" and the north elevation is 15' S.5", which would make the sign 88%of the width. We only allow 853'0 of the width. (Height is limited to 709'a.)However this size would fit on the west wall elevation right at 85%with a 16' wati. So everything depends on+.thesize of the spandrel panel area on the building. Please take a look at the attached PDF and work to provide a solution that fits within the Sign Ordinance requirements. 4 If you wcere going to install a ground sign, the maximum height we allow is 6'. So the options shown in the book would hot work. A smaller sign would have to be made to meet the 6' height requirement. We do appreciate (and require)the stone/masonry base, so it is good to see you've already included that in your design manual. We are not in favor of the originally proposed tag line sign "A cold beer never looked so good". Wall signs are for identification, and if there is room within the square footage, tag lines can be included. Since that is most likely not the case here, we would recommend to install this signage on a window or awning. If it is on an awning, the square footage would be subtracted from the allowable wall sign square footage. If it is on a window, it can be a maximum of 30% of the window area, and cannot be illuminated. Lastly, I saw projecting signs and flag signs in the manual. Are these proposed to be used at this location? Please let me know as these would be counted as an identification sign, thus taking away wall or ground sign availability. Please let me know if you have questions regarding any of this. Rachel will issue you a detailed email on Monday, but, for now, the major concems are: 1. that the sign does not fit within the two soldier course brick areas. Right now, the sign is calculated at 1000 of the height of the 'spandrel panel' area, and it needs to be at or less than 70%. The sign has to fit in with the architectural features/elements and not cover them up or extend past them. Here isa link to the sign ordinance online: http://www.carmel.in.ov/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=2986, and please read the Single Tenant Building section. 2. Also the cabinet sign option is not permitted, nor looked upon favorably. So, some options are'that you could modify the sign height, or modify the soldier course brick area in a way that the brick patterning would 'frame ouY the sign. I will be available tomorrow if you want to discuss further, but Rachel will be out of the office until Monday. Here are some preliminary review comments I have for you: 1. Wouidn't it make sense make all of the metal areas be a black, OR be a dak green? Right now there is a mix of Roycroft Bottle Green and Black Magic. (Case in point—the metal canopy below the wall sign is black, but the metal toof will be green.) We will be changing them all to black 2. On the East (actually, it is the West) elevation , please add in a brick border at the bottom of that glass block infill area, to continue what is going on with those window flanking each side. Will do 3. On the South (actually, it is the North) elevation, please provide more details about the EIFS areas just below the green metal roof. What color will that be? And why can't it just be stone, or just extend the windows all the way up to the metal roof area? Right now, it looks awkward. We have removed the EIFS and will use the same stone above 4. On the South actually, it is the North) elevation—what color will the smooth face sign band be?Also, what material will it be? Lastly, is it even needed?See detail 03/A-6.0 it is a Fypon material and is part of the Tilted Kilt Corporate tlesign. 5. Wall sign—as I emailed you below, the sign needs to fit within the architectural elements and detailing of that 'tower' area.
