Dear Phil:
Earlier today,we visited tLe above referenced jobsite to investigate an 11-7/S" TJI
230 joist that:has a notched top tlange. The joist is located in the secood floor
framing near an end wall adjacent to the garage. Sevcral factors wntribute to the
fact that the exisiing condition in the field is acceptable; therefore no repair or
reinforcement is necessary to tbe joist in questioa. These factors are as follows:
1) Short span of the joist creating low stresses in the joist.
2)Joist located.close to the, garage wall, reducing ttie effective oa cealc: spac:ug to
--- less`tLan`tbe normal 16°joist o.c. spacing.
3) Location of the notch, near the bearing wa1L
4) Severity of the notch (only one half of flange removed)
Agaio, the joist in question is acceptable and no repair is necessary.
If t6erc are aoy further questions, please contact me at 370-5174.
Sincerely,
Dave Pritchett
