B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including but not
limited to the following:
1. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
2. Installation methods.
C. Shop Drawings: Provide detail drawings of special masonry shapes.
D. Selection Samples:
1. For bricks, provide sample panel showing full color range and texture of bricks.
2. For thru-wall masonry units, provide sample panel showing full color range and
texture of masonry units.
E. Verification Samples: For each unit specified, at least four units each, representing actual
product, color, and texture.
F. Product Certificates:
1. Signed by manufacturer, including name and address of contractor, project location,
and the quantity, and date or dates of shipment of delivery to which certificate applies.
2. Indicating testing laboratory’s facilities and qualifications of its principals and key
personnel to perform tests specified.
3. Indicating that specified products meet requirements:
1.4 LEED REQUIREMENTS / CREDIT
A. MR Credit 4 - Materials and Resources: Recycled Content; for products having recycled
content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer
recycled content.
1. Statement indicating cost for each product, and fraction by weight that is considered
recycled: 10 percent or greater, 1 Credit.
2. Statement indicating cost for each product, and fraction by weight that is considered
recycled: 20 percent or greater, 2 Credits.
B. MR Credit 5: Materials and Resources: Regional Materials - 10 percent extracted, processed
and manufactured regionally; for products and materials required to comply with
requirements for regional materials, certificates indicating location materials have been
extracted, harvested, or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles (800 km) of
Project site.
1. Statement indicating distance to Project, cost for each regional material, and fraction
by weight that is considered regional: 10 percent or greater, 1 Credit.
2. Statement indicating distance to Project, cost for each regional material, and fraction
by weight that is considered regional: 20 percent or greater, 2 Credits.
C. ID Credit 1.1 - Innovative Design:
1. Exemplary Performance:

3. SMaRT Consensus Sustainable Product Standards Certified: 1 Credit.
Use SMaRT Certified building materials and products for 2.5% of the total value of
all building materials and products used in the project, based on cost. The "cost value"
of products for the purposes of this calculation will be discounted by 50% for Silver
level products, and doubled for products certified at the platinum level. CalStar bricks
and thru-wall units are certified at the platinum level.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Source Limitations for Thru-Wall Masonry Units: For each color required, provide masonry
units of uniform texture and color, or a uniform blend within the ranges accepted for these
characteristics, from a single manufacturer.
B. Field Sample Panel: Lay up a sample panel..
1. Use masonry units from random cubes of units delivered on site.
2. Include reinforcing, ties, and anchors.
3. Use sample panels approved by Architect for standard of workmanship for new
masonry work.
4. Use sample panel to test cleaning methods.
5. Do not remove sample panel until construction activities for this work have been
accepted by Architect.
C. Mockup: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and
application workmanship.
1. Finish areas designated by Architect.
2. Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and texture are
approved by Architect.
3. Refinish mockup area as required to produce acceptable work.
4. Do not remove mockup until construction activities of this work have been accepted
by Architect.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
B. Comply with instructions and recommendations of manufacturer for delivery, storage, and
handling requirements.
1.7 PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
A. Source Limitations for Bricks and Thru-Wall Units: For each color required, provide brick
or thru-wall unit of uniform texture and color, or a uniform blend within the ranges accepted
for these characteristics, from a single manufacturer.
B. Extra Materials: Furnish extra units amounting to 2 percent of installed materials, for each
color or color blend installed.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS

2.2 BRICK WITH RECYCLED CONTENT
A. Non-Fired Bricks with Recycled Content: Unit masonry composed of Class C fly ash and
fine aggregates as manufactured by CalStar Products, Inc.
B. Materials:
1. Fabrication: Non-fired brick.
2. Curing: Fly ash, aggregate, mineral oxide pigments, and proprietary ingredients
mixed with water, vibrocompacted, and cured into stable solid.
3. Composition: Primary ingredient is ASTM C618 Class C fly ash, self-cementing
byproduct of coal combustion.
4. Texture: Standard (smooth) or tumbled texture.
C. Compliance:
1. Strength: 3000 psi, minimum gross compressive strength.
2. Absorption: 17% maximum water absorption.
3. Structural and Weathering Performance: pass 50 cycles of the freezing and thawing
test in ASTM C67, with maximum 0.5% weight loss.
4. Dimensional Tolerance: ± 1/16 inch of specified dimensions.
5. Initial Rate of Absorption: 2 g/min/30 square inches.
D. Environmental Performance:
1. Recycled Content: 37 percent post-industrial waste by weight, fly ash content.
2. Carbon Footprint: Not to exceed 0.13 lb of carbon dioxide per modular brick, cradle-
to-gate, as certified by environmental product declaration (EPD).
3. Embodied Energy: Not to exceed 1300 BTUs per modular brick, cradle-to-gate, as
certified by environmental product declaration (EPD).
E. Pigmentation: Provide brick colored with pigments conforming to ASTM C979.

2. Composition: Fly ash, aggregate, integral pigments, and water.
3. Size (Actual Dimensions):
a. 12-inch Bed Depth: 11-5/8 inches (295 mm) wide by 3-5/8 inches (92 mm)
high by 15-5/8 inches (397 mm) long.
4. Finish: Premium CalStar finish, with smooth faces.
B. Pigmentation: Provide integral through-body color with pigments conforming to ASTM
C979.
1. Color: Redwood Range
C. Environmental Performance:
1. Recycled Content: 37 percent post-industrial waste by weight, fly ash content.
2. Carbon Footprint: To be at least 85% lower than the equivalent cradle-to-gate industry
baseline (industry baseline provided in PCA Life Cycle Inventory of Portland Cement
Concrete, 2007, Concrete Masonry Unit section), as certified by the manufacturer
with calculations provided based on an externally-reviewed LCA.
3. Embodied Energy: To be at least 25% lower than the equivalent cradle-to-gate
industry baseline (industry baseline provided in the PCA Life Cycle Inventory of
Portland Cement Concrete, 2007, Concrete Masonry Unit section), as certified by the
manufacturer with calculations based on an externally-reviewed LCA.
2.4 ASSEMBLY MATERIALS
A. Masonry Cleaner: Clean in compliance with CalStar Tech Note on Cleaning Fly Ash
Masonry.
1. Detergent type cleaner selected for each type of unit used and recommended in
writing by unit manufacturer.
2. Muriatic acid cleaners are not acceptable.
B. Mortar Materials
1. Refer to Specification Section 042000 - Unit Masonry.
2. Color: As selected by Architect.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.
B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of
unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
C. Verify field conditions are acceptable and are ready for work.
D. Verify built-in items are in proper location, and ready for work.

3.2 PREPARATION
A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best
result for the substrate under the project conditions.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Installation of Brick Masonry Units: Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
and the following.
1. NCMA TEK 3-6C “Concrete Masonry Veneers” excluding adhered veneer.
2. Maintain masonry courses to uniform dimension. Form bed and head joints of uniform
thickness.
3. Lay masonry in bond pattern as indicated on Drawings.
4. Lay masonry with full head and bed joints.
5. Tool mortar joints to a concave appearance. Tool exposed joints when "thumb-print"
hard.
6. Maintain a clean working area. Clean mortar droppings and smears off of bricks as
work progresses. Mortar is significantly easier to remove when it is fresh and has not
had time to harden and cure.
B. Installation of Thru-Wall Units: Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions,
NCMA e-TEK Technical Manuals, and the following:
1. Lay masonry in bond pattern as indicated in Drawings.
2. Maintain a clean working area. Clean mortar droppings and smears off of masonry
units as work progresses.
C. Movement Joints:
1. Locate as shown on Drawings or as indicated by manufacturer, whichever is more
stringent.
2. Use a bond breaker or slip-plane when dissimilar materials are used adjacent to one
another.
D. Comply with CalStar Tech Note on Cleaning Fly Ash Masonry for progress cleanings and
final cleaning.
3.4 MAINTENANCE
A. Maintenance: Maintain installed brick in accordance with NCMA TEK 8-1A, “Maintenance
of Concrete Masonry Walls”.
3.5 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of project.
B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
