SECTION 086200 - UNIT SKYLIGHTS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Prefabricated fixed skylights.
2. Curbs.
3. Fall protection grilles.
1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Plastic unit skylights shall conform to recommendations of the AIA Specifications for
aluminum Structures.
B. Skylights shall be designed to carry a minimum 20 psf tributary roof load or greater per site as
specified in the current International Building Code or prevailing model code.
C. Skylights shall be tested and labeled in accordance to AAMA\WDMA\CSA\101\I.S.2\A440 as
required by Section 2405.5 of the 2003 International Building Code.
D. The test laboratory shall also perform a 200 lb drop test from a height of 24” above the center
(highest point) of dome shape and at mid points of both the 5’ and 6’ side. (approximately 15”
and 18” from center) The 200 lb. load shall be contained within a flexible bladder or sack
having approximate dimensions no larger than 30” long, 20” wide, and 8” high, filled with
course sand or pea gravel. The dome shall withstand the sack drop without inverting or
breaking. The drop test shall be witnessed and certified by the test laboratory which provides
the NAFS certification.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
3. Installation methods.
B. Shop Drawings. Provide scaled shop drawings accurately locating and detailing the skylight
system.
C. Certifications and Reports: Provide Manufacturer’s certifications and reports within 60 days of
contract award showing that the skylights to be provided conform to the specifications.

1. Drop Test: Provide certification of passing drop test signed by test laboratory.
2. 50 Percent Impact: Provide manufacturer’s certification that glazing material conforms to
the 50% impact requirements of these specifications.
3. NAFS Certification: Provide manufacturer’s certification showing that the skylight
system provided has been tested in accordance to AAMA\WDMA\CSA\101\I.S.2\A440.
4. NFRC Certification: Provide certification issued by NFRC that skylights comply with U-
Value and SHGC requirements specified. Use mandatory default requirements of
ASHRAE 90.1.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications:
1. Materials and products for the Skylight System to be provided by a company engaged in
the manufacture of skylight systems for a minimum of 10 years.
2. Manufacturer: Obtain skylights and accessories from a single Manufacturer. Provide
secondary materials from same manufacturer.
3. Product: Skylights to be certified by the NFRC and the NAFS.
1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
B. Store products per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
C. Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials,
in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.
1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits
recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under
environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
1.7 WARRANTY
A. Skylight System: Manufacturer’s 5 year warranty to include:
1. Change in light transmission of no more than 6% per ASTM D-1003
2. No delamination shall occur to a panel that is subjected to a load of 10 pounds per square
foot in a manner that would tend to cause delamination of the face.
3. Thermal aging - the light transmission and the color shall not change after exposure to
heat of 300 deg F for 25 minutes. (When measured per ASTM D-1003 and ASTM D-
2244 respectively).

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Basis-of-Design: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Bristolite Daylighting
Systems; Contact Paul L. Dudley 714-540-8950 Double Glazed Signature Series Skylight;
Model NO. 6072-ALT, insulating double dome, or a comparable product by the following:
1. Sunoptics Prismatic Skylights Model 5060
B. Give preference to materials with high recycled content and those that are
extracted/manufactured within 500 miles of the project site. Include these products in
Contractor’s LEED Action Plan and Subcontractor Scope and product purchase review in order
to increase the likelihood of achieving 2 points for recycled content and 2 points for regional
materials.
2.2 FIXED SKYLIGHT UNITS
A. Description: Factory fabricated aluminum framed plastic thermalized sealed double glazed
dome skylights.
B. Glazing Panels: Clear
1. Outer Lens: 100 percent impact modified clear prismatic acrylic of sufficient thickness to
meet the specified performance requirements.
2. Inner lens: High diffusing white prismatic acrylic.
3. Energy Requirements: Glazing material shall have a maximum light distribution
4. characteristic that maximizes the shading factor. The combined inner/outer lens target
values shall be as follows:
5. Light Transmittance: 70 percent minimum.
6. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: .50 maximum. NFRC 200
7. “U” Value: .65 or lower (glazing and framing) in accordance with NFRC 100 or
8. “unlabeled skylight” default requirements of ASHRAE 90.1.
C. Frame:
1. ASTM B 221 alloy 6063-T5 extruded aluminum frame with extruded aluminum dome
2. retaining angle, insulated thermal break with no exposed metal to the interior, and
integral condensate gutter.
3. Finish: Manufacturer's standard clear mill finish.
4. Provide pre-installed 1-1/2” x 1/4” foam rubber gasket between frame and curb.
5. Provide weather sweep attached to frame.
6. Curb Dimensions: Verify with selected skylight model and manufacturer.
2.3 SKYLIGHT CURBS
A. Skylight Curb: Provide skylight curb meeting the following requirements:
1. 14” high.

2. Formed from 16 gauge steel with a treated 2x4 wood nailer and R-10 rigid closed cell
polyisocyanurate foam core board (minimum 1 ½” thick).
3. 4” minimum flange on all four sides.
4. Fall Protection Grille consisting of:
a. ½” diameter steel bars welded at each intersection of a nominal 6” x 6” grid.
b. 6” x 6” Steel Grid to provide compliance to:
1) OSHA Regulation 29 CR 1910.501 “Duty to have fall protection”
2) OSHA Regulation 1910.23(e)(8) – Skylight Screen Construction
5. Finishes:
a. Interior of Curb – Manufacturer’s standard powder coat, Color: White
b. Fall Protection Grille - Manufacturer’s standard powder coat, Color: White
2.4 ACCESSORIES
A. Sealant: As recommended by skylight manufacturer.
B. Fasteners (For anchorage of skylight to roof curb): #12 x 1-1/2 inch stainless steel screws with
washers, furnished by skylight manufacturer. Provide fasteners in sufficient quantity for
complete installation.
C. Washers: Neoprene/stainless steel bonded washer furnished by skylight manufacturer.
2.5 FABRICATION
A. Skylights shall be assembled and glazed ready for installation
B. Fabricate skylights weathertight and free of visual distortions and defects.
C. Exterior drip/counterflashing and drainage ports shall be protected from weather and air-borne
debris. Corners of curb and retaining frames shall be mitered and full penetration welded.
Retaining frames that secure the glazing panels along each side under spring tension need not be
welded and must be sealed with a silicone sealant along the full perimeter of the retaining
frame. Skylight frames shall be predrilled for anchorage to roof curbs.
D. Seal glazing panels to base frame allowing for sufficient expansion and contraction. Provide
weeping hole arrangement.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of
unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best
result for the substrate under the project conditions.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Install skylights on manufactured curbs in accordance with manufacturer's published
instructions. Coordinate with installation of roofing system and related flashings. Provide
weathertight installation.
B. Separate aluminum surfaces of units in contact with cementitious materials or dissimilar metals
with bituminous coating or other permanent separation as recommended by manufacturers.
C. Skylight Orientation: Install skylight with ribs in the orientation indicated on the Drawings.
D. Attach skylight to curbs with specified fasteners and washers with minimum spacing of 12
inches on center.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Inspect skylight installation and attachment to manufactured curbs. Verify that installation is
weathertight.
B. Correct deficiencies in Work which inspection indicates are not in compliance with Contract
Documents.
3.5 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of project.
B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
3.6 CLEANING
A. Follow manufacturer’s instructions when washing down exposed skylight surfaces using a
solution of mild detergent in warm water that is applied with soft, clean wiping cloths.

B. Follow skylight manufacturer guidelines when removing foreign substances from skylight
surfaces requiring mineral spirits or any solvents that are acceptable for use.
C. Installers shall leave skylight system clean at completion of installation and at Project
completion.
