SECTION 220000
PLUMBING GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SECTION INCLUDES
A. Basic mechanical requirements specifically applicable to Division 22 sections, in addition to all divisions
of the Project Manual.
B. This Section includes instructions on general project objectives, alternatives, as -built drawings,
submittals, regulatory requirements, and general installation instructions.
1.02 SUMMARY
A. Provide all labor, materials, accessories, and all other related items as required to complete all operations
in connection with the complete installation of the plumbing systems as indicated on the Contract
Drawings and as specified herein.
1.03 RELATED SECTIONS
A. Terms and Conditions of the Contract and Division 1, General Requirements, apply to all the work,
including the work of this Division. Examine all Contract Documents for requirements affecting the Work.
B. Division 9: Painting
1.04 WORK SEQUENCE
A. Install materials and equipment in phases to accommodate occupancy requirements during the
construction period. Contractors shall coordinate their schedule and operations with sequence as
described in Section 1040 – Coordination.
1.05 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
A. Conform to applicable requirements of fed eral, state, or local agency regulations and codes.
B. Nothing in the Contract Documents shall be construed to conflict with any laws, ordinances or
regulations of authorities having jurisdiction over the contract work and requirements shall be complied
with throughout, without additional cost to the Owner.
C. Make changes required by applicable laws, ordinances, codes, and enforcing authorities.
1.06 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Verify field dimensions
B. Install work in locations indicated, unless prevented by project conditions:
1. Request such locations from the Architect/Engineer sufficiently in advance of the time when such
information will be required at the site so as not to interfere with the progress of his work or that of
other contractors.
2. Should equipment be set without securing the approval of the Architect/Engineer, reset the equipment

as required at no additional cost to the Owner.
C. The general location of the apparatus and the details of the Work are indicated on the Contract
Drawings. Exact locations not ind icated shall be determined at the site as the Work progresses and shall
be subject to the Construction Representative's approval.
D. It is not intended that the Contract Drawings shall show every pipe, fitting or appliance, but it shall be a
requirement to furnish, without additional expense, all material and labor necessary to complete the
systems with the highest possible quality available.
1.07 REQUIREMENTS
A. Protection of equipment and materials: Responsibility for care and protection of all materials and
plumbing work rests with Contractor at all times until the entire Project has been completed, tested and
the Project is accepted.
1.08 ADJUSTMENTS AND OWNER'S INSTRUCTIONS
A. After completion of the installation work called for in this Specification, furnish necessary Mechanics or
Engineers for system commissioning which shall include the adjustment and operational review of all
systems to the end that the systems may be perfec tly adjusted and turned over to Owner in perfect
working order. Provide instruction to Owner’s authorized representative in the care and operation of the
systems, providing all required framed instruction charts, directions, and all other related items.
1.09 PAINTING
A. Refer to Division 9 - Painting.
1.10 SUBMITTALS
A. The Contractor shall, after award of contract and before installation, submit for approval Shop Drawings,
bulletins, product data, and all other related items in accordance with requirements of Division 1 and
each respective Division 22 Section.
B. Submit Shop Drawings and product data as required in each section. Submittal shall include all physical
data and performance data required to verify compliance with the Contract Documents.
C. Submit samples in accordance with requirements of Division 1.
D. Shop Drawings:
1. Prepare and submit Shop Drawings in accordance with the requirements of Division 1, and obtain
the Construction Representative’s approval before proceeding with the fabrication and work.
2. Show plans, elevations, details and job conditions, relationship to other work, and indicate finishes.
3. Shop Drawings and catalog cuts shall indicate Specification Section and paragraph requiring
equipment submitted.
E. Provide Submittals on the Following Items:
1. Roof drains.
2. Cleanouts.
3. Grease interceptor.
4. Truck well and compactor drains.
5. Water piping.

F. Samples: Submit all samples, as requested by the Construction Representative, of materials specified
herein in accordance with requirements of the Terms and Conditions, and before ordering materials, obtain
written approval from the Construction Representative.
G. Product Guarantees and Warranties: Provide manufacturers' standard guarantee/warranty for all products
provided in this section.
1.11 RECORD DOCUMENTS
A. Contractor shall provide an "As-Built" of each Plumbing Drawing, at a scale no less than 3/32" = 1'-0", and
record Specifications to the Construction Representative.
B. Contractor must keep two copies, a working copy for contractor i n field, and a separate, clean set kept in
GC’s trailer that gets updated weekly. Turn over clean set at end of job. GC shall send a CD with record
drawings scanned, full size, in color, to Engineer and Architect.
1.12 CLEANING
A. Remove all debris from sit e daily and locate in dumpster provided by General Contractor.
B. All material and pieces of equipment shall be turned over to Owner free of any dust and dirt, both inside
and out.
C. At the completion of the Project, all equipment shall have a clean, neat appearance of factory finish by
cleaning or repainting as required.
1.13 SUBSTITUTIONS
A. Comply with all provisions of the Terms and Conditions and Division 1.
B. The first item listed under "Acceptable Manufacturers" is the design basis. Other manufacturers l isted
may be used in the base bid, but dimensional and electrical data must be verified by the General
Contractor and Subcontractor and reviewed by Owner. Any modifications required shall be made at the
General Contractor’s and Subcontractor’s expense. F or items that have no manufacturers listed, any
item meeting all the Specifications is acceptable.
1.14 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate scheduling, submittals, and Work of the various Sections of Specifications to assure efficient
and orderly sequence of installation of interdependent construction elements.
B. Coordinate space requirements and installation of plumbing work which are indicated diagrammatically
on the Contract Drawings. Follow routing indicated for pipes as closely as practicable. Utilize spa ces
efficiently to maximize accessibility.
C. In finished areas, conceal pipes within the construction. Coordinate locations of fixtures and outlets with
finish elements.
D. Coordinate completion and clean up of Work of separate Sections in preparation for comp letion.
E. After occupancy of the premises, coordinate access to site for correction of defective Work and Work

not in accordance with Contract Documents, to minimize disruption of occupant’s activities.
1.15 TESTING
A. After the entire installation is completed , ready for operation, the Contractor shall test the systems.
Owner will provide all water and electric current for the tests. The Contractor shall provide necessary
labor, test pump, gauges, meters, other instruments and materials. All tests shall be ma de in the presence
of the Construction Representative
PART 2 - PRODUCTS

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Study All Drawings and specifications, visit the site and become acquainted with existing conditions and
the requirements of the plans and specifications. No claim will be recognized for extra compensation due
to failure to become familiarized with the conditions and extent of the Work.
3.02 PIPING SYSTEM INSTALLATION
A. All pipe branch lines shall be run concealed. When not practical, exposed piping shall be painted, color by
Architect.
B. Sanitary:
1. Piping:
a. Sanitary piping shall be 4 inch minimum diameter installed with a slope of not less than 1/8" per
foot except as noted on the Drawings.
b. Piping below grade shall be laid on a firm bed for its entire length.
2. Joints:
a. PVC piping shall have solvent cement joints.
C. Grease Waste and Vent System:
1. Piping:
a. Grease Waste piping shall be 4-inch minimum diameter installed with a slope of not less than 1/4"
per foot except as noted on the Drawings.
b. Piping below grade shall be laid on a firm bed for its entire length.
c. Piping above grade shall be supported from top chord of structural steel.
d. Discharge temperatures shall not exceed 140 degrees F, temper waste as required.
2. Joints:
a. PVC piping shall have solvent cement joints.
D. Storm Water Drainage System: Storm Water drainage system shall consist of all piping and connections to
roof drains required for drainage.
1. All horizontal drain piping above finished floor shall be insulated down to the first fitting.
2. Provide bird screen on overflow drain outlets.
3.03 PIPING SPECIALTIES INSTALLATION
A. Pipe insulators shall be installed between all copper and ferrous piping to prevent galvanic corrosion.

B. Unions shall be installed in long runs of piping.
3.04 VALVE INSTALLATION
A. All valves shall be installed above accessible coolers and freezers where possible to allow for easy
accessibility for operation, maintenance and repair. Valves shall be installed with stems in upright or
horizontal position with brass, numbered valve tags.
B. Valves shall be installed at the following locations:
1. Incoming domestic water service.
3.05 TESTS
A. Test and prove tight all piping systems in the building. Each test shall be witnessed by the local Plumbing
Inspector and the Construction Representative. Submit to the Construction Representative a copy of the
Certificates of Tests which have been signed by the local Plumbing Inspector.
1. Drainage systems shall be tested with air pressure or with water to the roof.
2. All tests will be conducted for 2 hrs. minimum with no pressure drop in the respective systems.
3. Submit a water quality sample to the Water Authority or Water Testing Agency.
3.06 CLEANING
A. At the completion of Work all fixtures and equipment shall be cleaned in acco rdance with the appropriate
manufacturer's recommendations. All exposed unchromed piping shall be cleaned of all dirt, grease, oils,
etc., suitable to accept a prime coat of paint.
3.07 CUTTING AND PATCHING
A. Cutting and patching required for plumbing system installation shall be the responsibility of this
Contractor. The Contractor shall hire the Project roofing, masonry, flooring, painting, gypsum
wallboard, and other Subcontractor’s regularly engaged in the type of work and surfaces to be cut and
patched.
