'9, 2015 I TS •?`P1 d .,.._..-T ys"`moi: to r c , . a. i November 17, 1947 - March 30, 1993 A Brief History. ®f the "John Allen Student Symposium" The history of the John Allen Student Symposium began with Dr.John R.Allen,a professor of Recreation 1977-1993. Dr.Allen became Chairperson of the Recreation Department in 3.983 and remained there until his untimely death to cancer in 1993 at the young age of 45. Professor Allen was known for his great sense of humor and ability to work with people at all levels. He cared for those less fortunate than himself. Dr.Allen is remembered for his active role in the region's Special Olympics, his involvement with the Carbondale Park District, his work to start an alumni scholarship, and the instituting of the Alumni Hall of Fame. Professor Allen was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and four times received the Outstanding Teacher Award. Much the same way he did for his two sons,John had a strong sense of willingness to help students solve problems. Prior to his death, Dr.Allen, along with the recreation faculty Page 1 of 6 f i i Jolm Allen.
