OF COMMUNITY SERVICES Stephen C. Engelking Director May 30, 1997 Mr. Gary I. Linder The Linder Company Keystone at the Crossing 8555 N. River Road Suite 375 Indianapolis, IN 46240-4305 Dear Mr. Linder: This is in response to your inquiry about a roof sign for a prospective tenant which would be situated above the east face of Merchants Square. Such a sign would be considered a "roof identification sign" as described in Section 25.7.02-9 of the Carmel/Clay Sign Ordinance. That section, which regulates sigge for "multi-tenant ground floor buildings," allows any business that is oriented to more than one (1) public street to have (1) wall or roof identification sign per frontage with a maximum of two (2) signs. Since the sign you inquired about would be only the second sign for your prospective tenant, it would be permitted under the Sign Ordinance. A roof identification sign would not be considered an "ori premise sign" as described in Section 25.7.01-4(1) of the Sign Ordinance. That section applies to signs that are located on entirely different parcels. It regulates signs that have a primary purpose of advertising rather than helping customers identify where a business is located. Please feel free to call me if you have any further questions about signage. Sincerely, Step en C.
