GRAND TOTAL $13.34 1 CITY OF CARMEL JAMES BRAINARD, MAYOR June 27,2017 Re: Local historic district designation for Thomhurst in Carmel Dear Residents: The Carmel Historic Preservation Commission(CHPC)invites you to attend an informational meeting on July 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the chapel of the Carmel Friends Church(651 W. Main St.)to discuss the prospect of a local historic district designation for Thornhurst. At the meeting,CHPC staff will explain the terms and benefits of local historic district status, answer questions, and gather feedback from homeowners. As you likely know, Thornhurst is Carmel's only district listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Accordingly, the CHPC believes it would be fitting for Thornhurst to become the city's first local historic district as well. The CHPC conducted a survey of historic buildings in Carmel in 2014 in which it determined that Thornhurst would meet the requirements for a local historic district. A local designation would help to protect the singular character of the subdivision while safeguarding property values in the process. As of now, there is no local designation process underway for the neighborhood, and we are simply seeking input from homeowners regarding the possibility of a future local historic district listing for your exceptional enclave of mid-century modern homes. The listing process requires the consent and participation of a majority of homeowners within and adjacent to a proposed local historic district, and no designation will take place without your involvement. Please attend the meeting to learn more about the differences between national and local historic district designations and to share your ideas regarding the long-term future of Thornhurst's historic architecture. If you plan to participate in the meeting, please RSVP to CHPC staff Sam Burgess at(317)822-7908 or sburgess_na,indianalandmarks.ora by July 17,2017. For more information on local historic district designation, please visit the CHPC's website at hqp://www.carmel.in.gov/index.asl2x?page=629. Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to a productive and informative conversation on July 20. Sincerely, i 041VP min -N19541_1 Nick Davis Mark Dollase CHPC Chairperson CHPC Staff 44-4,Q.F.
