P.O.BOR 894 DUNDEE,IL 60118 847-426.4075 Preparing for an EVT exam is an essential part of the certification process. Even the most experienced and skilled technicians need to review the objectives and reference material before taking an EVT exam. While the task may be familiar, seeing it on paper may not be familiar--knowing it and putting it into words are two different things.Proper preparation and study is the best way to pass the exams no matter how much practical experience a technician has. The EVT exams may be taken in any order,F-1,Maintenance,Inspection,&Testing of Fire Apparatus is the first exam listed, but that does not mean it has to be taken first or that it is the easiest. The F-1 exam contains many questions directly from the NFPA 1911,so a thorough review of that document is imperative. Choose your first exam on a subject that you are most familiar within order to get a feel for what to expect on future exams. TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR AN EVT EXAM Register Early • Provides motivation to begin the studying process • Allow time to obtain reference material, some of the reference material may take several weeks to obtain • Allow ample time to prepare,do not wait until the week before the exam to begin Study--this is a learning experience. The purpose of this program is to elevate and improve the standards of emergency response vehicle technicians • Briefly preview learning objectives to become familiar with topics covered • Gather recommended reference material • Read each objective carefully • Highlight or underline objectives not known or not understood • Look up highlighted items in reference material • Some of the objectives may be hands on/accepted practice type items. Technicians may have to refer to other shop manuals to refresh knowledge of proper techniques. What to expect on the exams • Multiple choice questions with four choices-choose the answer that is most correct • True/False questions • Technician A or B questions--Questions that present a scenario about which each technician will make a statement. Choose whether Tech A or B or Both or Neither are correct How to answer questions • Read each question completely,do not skim or jump to conclusions • Do not read anything extra into the questions • Read through all the answers to the question, then choose the answer that is most correct • Do not leave any question unanswered. A blank answer is counted as a wrong answer • When reviewing drawings or schematics, look at all the possible situations Remember, proper preparation is the key to successful completion of the EVT exams. Review the objectives and study the reference material enclosed.
