Re: Safe Backfilling of House Foundations, Parkside Model, Plans A, B, and C
As you requested, I have reviewed the configurations and dimensions of the foundation plans for the
three Parkside Model homes as I have done for other models, After my reviews, I have concluded that
the basement walls for this model can support the loads imposed by early backfilling before the floor
system is in place, with proper care.
The three Parkside Model plans have overall dimensions of about 60'X 70', including three -car
garages, large crawl spaces, and different front porches.. The basement walls are 9'x nominal 8". The
left wall has a 59' straight section with three stiffening piers on the column lines.
When using your usual higher -than -minimum strength concrete mixtures, your experienced workmen
can safely place the backfill early as long as the maturity and the characteristics of the concrete are
given proper consideration. The ambient temperature and protection of the concrete are key elements
that must be taken into account by your builders. My opinion has taken into consideration the
reinforcing steel in the walls, the number of offsets in the walls; and the inclusion of stiffening elements
of reinforced concrete in the long, straight left wall where the span is more than 30 -feet between
intersecting walls,
