Double fire walls constructed in accordance with NFPA 221 are permitted. [Table 706.4, 706.2] Where the fire wall intersects the exterior wall, the exterior wall on both sides of the fire wall must have a 1-hour rating for a minimum of 4 feet, openings in the 1-hour wall must be 45-minute rated. [706.5.1] Where the fire wall serves as the exterior wall for a building and buildings have different roof levels, the fire wall can terminate at the underside of the roof sheathing or deck of the lower roof provided the lower roof assembly within 10 feet of the wall is 1-hour rated and the entire length and span of supporting elements for the rated roof assembly is 1-hour rated. There can be no openings in the lower roof within 10 feet of the fire wall. [712.1.2] Ducts that connect not more than two stories are not required to be enclosed in a shaft when the annular space around the duct is protected with an approved noncombustible material that resists the free passage of flame and the products of combustion. [1009.4] A headroom of at least 6'8" must be provided. Where the nosings of treads at the side of a flight extend under the edge of a floor opening through which the stair passes, the floor opening can project horizontally into the required headroom a maximum of 4- 3/4". [1009.5] The maximum riser height must be 8-1/4", the minimum tread depth is 9". A nosing projection not less than 0.75" and not more than 1.25" must be provided on stairways with a solid riser where the tread depth is less than 11". Within a dwelling unit the use of a volute, turnout, starting easing or starting newel is permitted over the lowest tread. Handrails within a dwelling unit that is not required to be accessible need extend only from the top riser to the bottom riser.
