The purpose of my visit was to evaluate a Floor joist that had been notched to accommodate a second floor plumbing fixture. Based on my cAiservations and analysis, it is my opinion that the floor joist is adequate. The second floor framing is 2x10 joists spaced at 16-inch centers The floor joist in question spans approximately l V-a" and supports the master bathr(mm flow. A notch roughly 2 inches deep and 4 inches long had been cut in the trip of the joist to allow passage of the bathtub drain The joist had been reinforced by nailing a 4-fool long W onto the side of the joist. The joist was analyzed for floor loads specified in the 2000 International Residential Code with Indiana amendments. Analysis indicated that the unreinforced joist with its reduced section at the notch is adequate for strength and deflection requirements.
