SECTION 08 14 16 – FLUSH WOOD DOORS
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Provide flush wood doors.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of door indicated. Submit for approval veneer samples,
shop drawings, product data, and warranty.
B. Provide technical documents describing core construction and any special provisions.
C. Shop Drawings: Indicate location, size, and hand of each door; elevation of each kind
of door; construction details not covered in Product Data; location and extent of
hardware blocking; and other pertinent data.
D. Samples for Initial Selection: For factory-finished doors
E. Samples for Verification:
1. Factory finishes applied to actual door face materials, approximately 8 by 10
inches, for each material and finish. For each wood species and transparent
finish, provide set of three samples showing typical range of color and grain to be
expected in the finished work.
2. Corner sections of doors, approximately 8 by 10 inches, with door faces and
edges representing actual materials to be used.
a. Provide samples of each species of veneer and solid lumber required.
b. Finish veneer-faced door samples with same materials proposed for
factory finished doors.
F. Warranty: Sample of special warranty.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Comply with governing codes and regulations. Provide products of acceptable
manufacturers which have been in satisfactory use in similar service for three years.
Use experienced installers. Deliver, handle, and store materials in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions.
1. Refer also to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.”
B. Comply with Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) Quality Standards.

C. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.
1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Comply with requirements of referenced standard and manufacturer's written
instructions.
B. Accept doors on site in manufacturer’s standard packaging. Do not store in damp or wet
areas.
C. Certain wood species such as cherry, walnut and mahogany are light sensitive. Protect
doors from exposure to natural and artificial light after delivery.
D. Mark each door on top and bottom rail with opening number used on Shop Drawings.
1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install doors until spaces are enclosed and
weather tight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and HVAC system is operating
and maintaining temperature between 60 and 90 deg F and relative humidity between
25 and 55 percent during the remainder of the construction period.
1.7 WARRANTY
A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair
or replace doors that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Warping (bow, cup, or twist) more than 1/4 inch in a 42-by-84-inch section.
b. Telegraphing of core construction in face veneers exceeding 0.01 inch in a
3-inch span.
2. Warranty shall also include installation and finishing that may be required due to
repair or replacement of defective doors.
3. Warranty Period for Solid-Core Interior Doors: Life of installation.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1 DOOR CONSTRUCTION, GENERAL
A. Low-Emitting Materials: Fabricate doors with adhesives and composite wood products
that do not contain urea formaldehyde.
B. Particleboard-Core Doors:
1. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1, Grade LD-2, made with binder containing no urea-
formaldehyde resin.

2. Blocking: Provide wood blocking in particleboard-core doors as follows:
a. 5-inch top-rail blocking, in doors indicated to have closers.
b. 5-inch bottom-rail blocking, in exterior doors and doors indicated to have
kick, mop, or armor plates.
c. 5-inch mid-rail blocking, in doors indicated to have exit devices.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Manufacturers
1. Marshfield Door Systems, Inc.
B. Architectural Flush Wood Doors
1. General: Solid Core Wood Doors for interior use per AWI Section 1300.
2. Thickness: 1-3/4 inches.
3. Veneer: Book match veneer leaves per AWI 1300-G-12; Balance match veneers
per AWI 1300-G-13
4. Face Veneer: Grade AA per AWI 200-T-9 and 1300-G-17 Species: white birch.
Cut: rotary cut U.N.O.
5. Core Construction:
a. Flush Doors: use cores of crossbanded particleboard meeting ANSI
A208.1, Grade LD-2; or structural composite lumber (SCL) core; or
laminated strand lumber (LSL) core .and meeting AWI 1300 Designation
PC-5 or SCLC-5. Provide 20-minute UL Label where required by door
schedule.
6. Door Grade: Premium Grade per AWI 1300-T-8, 1300-T-10, and 1300-T-16,
with Veneer Grade AA faces.
7. Finish: Manufacturer's standard factory pre-finished with performance equal to
AWI Standards Section 1500 Conversion Varnish System; a two-part catalyzed.
system for Premium Grade per AWI 1500-T-14. Color to be selected by
Architect.
8. Warranty: Lifetime warranty on all Architectural Flush Wood doors, including
those doors with view panels and louvers. Provide draft copy of warranty with
Submittals.
C. Rubber Silencers: Provide three resilient rubber silencers for each door.
2.3 FABRICATION
A. Factory fit doors to suit frame-opening sizes indicated. Comply with clearance
requirements of referenced quality standard for fitting unless otherwise indicated.
B. Factory machine doors for hardware that is not surface applied. Locate hardware to
comply with DHI-WDHS-3. Comply with final hardware schedules, door frame Shop
Drawings, DHI A115-W series standards, and hardware templates.
1. Coordinate with hardware mortises in metal frames to verify dimensions and
alignment before factory machining.
2. Metal Astragals: Factory machine astragals and formed-steel edges for
hardware for pairs of fire-rated doors.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Comply with AWI Quality Standards (8th Edition). Pre-fit all doors to steel frames in
accordance with AWI Section 1300-G-20.
B. When steel frames are used with wood doors, the hardware preparation on the door is
governed by the location on the frame. If the doors are factory mortised, the door
supplier is responsible for coordinating all hardware locations.
C. Factory-machine all doors to receive finish hardware as shown on schedule and to fit
frames identified in Section 08 11 13 or as otherwise shown on the Drawings.
D. Factory bevel all doors in accordance with AWI Section 1300-G-19.
E. Install doors with not more than 1/8" clearance at top and sides, 1/2" from finish surface
at bottom in accordance with AWI Section 1300-G-20.
F. After factory-machining for hardware described in Section 08 70 00, factory finish all
doors in accordance with this Section. Wrap and protect after all factory preparation
and before shipping to jobsite in accordance with AWI Section 1500.
G. Adjust, clean, and protect.
3.2 MILLING LIMITATIONS
A. Do not mill doors for hardware more than limits set by manufacturer. Verify minimum
distance between cutouts, mortising, bored holes, and door edges to maintain lifetime
warranty.
B. Do not provide particleboard cores for doors with vision light cutouts, or louvered
cutouts when any dimension between edges of cutouts, bored holes, milled cavities, or
other machined edge or door edge is less than 6 inches.
