SECTION 08 14 23 – METAL CLAD WOOD DOORS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Exterior metal clad wood doors.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product.
1. Include details of construction and glazing.
2. Include factory-finishing specifications.
B. Shop Drawings: For metal clad wood doors. Indicate location, size, and hand of each door;
elevation of each kind of door; construction details not covered in Product Data, including those
for stiles, rails, panels, and moldings (sticking); and other pertinent data, including the following:
1. Dimensions of doors for factory fitting.
2. Locations and dimensions of mortises and holes for hardware.
3. Undercuts.
4. Requirements for veneer matching.
5. Doors to be factory finished and finish requirements.
C. Samples for Initial Selection: For factory-finished doors.
D. Samples for Verification: Corner sections of doors, approximately 8 by 10 inches, with door
faces and edgings representing typical range of color and grain for each species of veneer and
solid lumber required. Finish Sample with same materials proposed for factory-finished doors.
1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Product Certificates: For each type of door, from manufacturer.
B. Sample Warranty: For special warranty.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.”.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Comply with requirements of referenced standard and manufacturer's written instructions.
B. Package doors individually in opaque plastic bags or cardboard cartons.
C. Mark each door on top and bottom rail with opening number used on Shop Drawings.
1.7 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install doors until spaces are enclosed and
weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and HVAC system is operating and
maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during remainder
of construction period.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace doors that fail in materials or
workmanship, or have warped (bow, cup, or twist) more than 1/4 inch in a 42-by-84-inch
section, within specified warranty period.
1. Warranty shall also include installation and finishing that may be required due to repair or
replacement of defective doors.
2. Warranty shall be in effect during the following period of time from date of Substantial
Completion:
a. Exterior Doors: Twenty years.
b. Insulating Glass Vision Panels: Five years.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Source Limitations: Obtain metal clad wood doors from single manufacturer.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. General: Use only materials that comply with referenced standards and other requirements
specified.
1. Assemble exterior doors, including components, with wet-use adhesives complying with
ASTM D 5572 for finger joints and with ASTM D 5751 for joints other than finger joints.
B. Adhesives: Do not use adhesives that contain urea formaldehyde.
C. Adhesives: Use adhesives that meet the testing and product requirements of the California
Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile
Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers."
D. Composite Wood Products: Products shall be made without urea formaldehyde.

E. Composite Wood Products: Products shall comply with the testing and product requirements of
the California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of
Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers."
F. Panel Products:
1. Finger jointed or laminated lumber with 0.0215” hot dipped galvanized steel facing.
G. Safety Glass: Provide products complying with testing requirements in 16 CFR 1201, for
Category II materials, unless those of Category I are expressly indicated and permitted.
2.3 EXTERIOR METAL CLAD WOOD DOORS
A. Thermal Transmittance: Maximum whole fenestration product U-factor of 0.30, according to
AAMA 1503, ASTM E 1423, or NFRC 100.
B. Exterior Metal Clad Wood Doors: Exterior doors complying with requirements specified.
1. Product: Masonite; Sta-Tru HD Wood Edge Prefinished Steel Entry Door.
2. Door Type: 1-3/4 Thermal (Insulated-Glass) Doors (Exterior).
3. Wood Species: Manufacturer's standard softwood species and cut.
4. Stile and Rail Construction: Structural composite lumber or edge- and end-glued lumber.
5. Panel Construction: Solid or composite lumber with 0.0215” hot dipped galvanized steel
facing.
6. Glass: Uncoated, clear, insulating-glass units made from two lites of 3.0-mm-thick, fully
tempered glass with 1/4-inch interspace complying with Section 08 80 00 "Glazing."
7. Mark, label, or otherwise identify stile and rail wood doors as complying with WDMA I.S.6
and grade specified. Include panel design number if applicable.
8. Primed Frame Saver frame.
9. Brick mold exterior trim.
2.4 METAL CLAD WOOD DOOR FABRICATION
A. Factory fit doors to suit frame-opening sizes indicated, with the following uniform clearances
and bevels unless otherwise indicated:
1. Clearances: Provide 1/8 inch at heads, jambs, and between pairs of doors. Provide 1/2
inch from bottom of door to top of decorative floor finish or covering. Where threshold is
shown or scheduled, provide not more than 3/8 inch from bottom of door to top of
threshold.
B. Factory machine doors for hardware that is not surface applied. Locate hardware to comply with
DHI-WDHS-3. Comply with final hardware schedules, door frame Shop Drawings, BHMA-
156.115-W, and hardware templates.
1. Coordinate measurements of hardware mortises in metal frames to verify dimensions and
alignment before factory machining.
C. Glazed Openings: Factory install glazing in doors, complying with Section 08 80 00 "Glazing."
Install glass using manufacturer's standard elastomeric glazing sealant complying with
ASTM C 920. Secure glass in place with removable wood moldings. Miter wood moldings at
corner joints.

D. Exterior Doors: Factory treat exterior doors after fabrication with water-repellent preservative to
comply with WDMA I.S.4. Flash top of outswinging doors with manufacturer's standard metal
flashing.
E. Provide stile and rail doors complete with frames, weather stripping, and hardware.
1. Provide wood door frames that comply with Section 06 20 23 "Interior Finish Carpentry."
2. Provide hardware, including weather stripping,that complies with Section 08 71 00 "Door
Hardware."
2.5 FINISHING
A. Finish metal clad wood doors at factory.
B. For doors indicated to be factory finished, comply with manufacturer’s requirements.
1. Finish faces and all four edges of doors, including mortises and cutouts.
C. Opaque Finish:
1. Color: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine doors and installed door frames, with Installer present, before hanging doors.
1. Verify that installed frames comply with indicated requirements for type, size, location,
and swing characteristics and have been installed with level heads and plumb jambs.
2. Reject doors with defects.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Hardware: For installation, see Section 08 71 00 "Door Hardware." Section 08 71 10 "Door
Hardware Schedule."
B. Installation Instructions: Install doors to comply with manufacturer's written instructions and
referenced quality standard, and as indicated.
1. Install fire-rated doors according to NFPA 80.
2. Install smoke- and draft-control doors according to NFPA 105.
C. Factory-Fitted Doors: Align in frames for uniform clearance at each edge.
D. Factory-Finished Doors: Restore finish before installation if fitting or machining is required at
Project site.

3.3 ADJUSTING
A. Operation: Rehang or replace doors that do not swing or operate freely.
B. Finished Doors: Replace doors that are damaged or do not comply with requirements. Doors
may be repaired or refinished if Work complies with requirements and shows no evidence of
repair or refinishing.
