Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Suspension system framing and furring for gypsum board assemblies. 2. Wire hangers, fasteners, main runners, cross tees, and wall angle moldings. B. Related Sections: 1. Division 9 "Gypsum Board" for ceiling material. 1.3 REFERENCES A. ASTM A 641 Standard Specification for Zinc-Coated Carbon Steel Wire. B. ASTM E 119 Standard Test Method for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Material (if applicable). 1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. General Performance: Gypsum ceiling suspension system shall withstand code specified loading requirements (where applicable) without failure due to defective manufacture, fabrication, installation, or other defects in construction. 1. Gypsum Ceiling Suspension System: Comply with performance requirements specified, as determined by testing manufacturer's standard assemblies representing those indicated for this Project. B. Structural Performance: Gypsum Ceiling Suspension System shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated according to SEI/ASCE 7. 1. Refer to Structural Drawings for loading requirements. C. Seismic Performance: Gypsum Ceiling Suspension System shall withstand the effects of earthquake motions determined according to SEI/ASCE 7. 1. The term "withstand" means "the unit will remain in place without separation of any parts from the device when subjected to the seismic forces specified." D. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes. 1. Temperature Change (Range): 120 deg F, ambient; 180 deg F, material surfaces. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for gypsum ceiling suspension system. B. Shop Drawings: For gypsum ceiling suspension system. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. C. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color and texture specified. D. Qualification Data: For qualified installer and manufacturer. E. Seismic Qualification Certificates: For gypsum ceiling suspension system accessories, and components, from manufacturer. 1. Basis for Certification: Indicate whether withstand certification is based on actual test of assembled components or on calculation. 2. Detailed description of equipment anchorage devices on which the certification is based and their installation requirements. F. Product Certificates: For each type of product, from manufacturer. G. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency, for each product. Manufacturer Qualifications: Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.” B. Installer Qualifications: Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.” C. Source Limitations for Gypsum Ceiling Suspension System: Obtain all system products from a single source. D. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide product or material identical to those of assemblies tested for fire resistance per ASTM E 119 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1. Indicate design designations from UL's "Fire Resistance Directory" or from the listings of another qualified testing agency. 2. Combustion Characteristics: ASTM E 136. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver materials to project site in original, unopened packages and store them in a fully enclosed space where they will be protected against damage from moisture, direct sunlight, surface contamination, and other causes. 1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Do not install products or materials that are wet, moisture damaged, or mold damaged. B. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install products or materials until spaces are enclosed and weather tight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and work above ceilings is complete, and temporary HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period. C. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of construction contiguous with gypsum ceiling suspension system by field measurements before fabrication. 1.9 COORDINATION A. Coordinate drywall furring work with installers or related work including, but not limited to acoustical ceilings, building insulation, gypsum board, light fixtures, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and sprinklers. B. All work above the ceiling line should be completed prior to installing the drywall sheet goods. There should be no materials resting against or wrapped around the suspension system, hanger wires or ties. 1.10 WARRANTY THE KENT 09 22 26- THE KENT Issue Date 05.09.18 GYPSUM CEILING SUSPENSION SYSTEM THE KENT A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace suspension system grid components that are supplied with a hot-dipped galvanized coating or aluminum based material that fail(s) in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. 1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following: a. The occurrence of 50% red rust as defined by ASTM D 610 test procedures as a result of effects in materials or factory workmanship. 2. Warranty Period (Grid): Ten years from date of Installation. 1.11 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following: 1. Armstrong World Industries. 2. United State Gypsum Company. 2.2 SUSPENSION SYSTEMS A. Main Components: 1. Main Beam: Shall be double-web construction (minimum 0.0179 inches prior to protective coating), hot dipped galvanized (per ASTM A 653). a. Web Height: 1-1/2 inch (with 15/16-inch flange) to 1-11/16 inch (with 1- 1/2 inch flange). 2. Primary Cross Tees: Shall be double-web steel construction (minimum 0.0179 inches prior to protective coating), hot dipped galvanized (minimum G40 or G90 per ASTM A 653), web height 1-1/2-inch rectangular bulb and pre-finished 1-1/2-inch knurled flange. 3. Secondary Framing Cross Tees: Shall be double web steel construction (minimum 0.0179 inch prior to protective coating), hot dipped galvanized (minimum G40, web height 1-1/2-inch rectangular bulb and 15/16-inch flange. B. Other Components: 1. Tees Designed for Creating Soffits: 1 1/2-inch web height, 1 ½- inch flange, flattened bulb, bending crimp, knockouts and alignment holes to facilitate creating angles. G40 or G90 hot dipped galvanized. 2. Wall Molding: 1 1/4 inch x 1 1/4 inch with pre-engineered locking tabs, knurled surface and pre-punched top flange. 3. Clips. 4. Custom Perimeter Trim: C. Classification can require wires to be closer together for additional loading when used to support double layer gypsum, verticals, slopes, domes, half barrels, circles, soffits, canopies, and step conditions which call for loading or unusual designs and shapes in drywall construction. Using cross tees in the construction of circles, barrels, etc. is common to hold the radius. 3. Deflection of fastening suspension system supporting light fixtures, ceiling grilles, access doors, verticals and horizontal loads shall have a maximum deflection of 1/360 of the span. 2.3 GENERAL FINISH REQUIREMENTS A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes. B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates areas, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting performance of the Work. B. Examine Insert products or materials before installation. Reject Insert products or materials that are wet, moisture damaged, or mold damaged. C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION - GENERAL A. Install suspension system and panels in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, in compliance with ASTM installation standard, and with applicable codes as required by authorities having jurisdiction. B. To secure to metal clips, concrete inserts, steel bar joists or steel deck, use power actuated fastener or insert. Coordinate placement for hanger wire spaced as required for expected ceiling loads and layout. C. Install hanger wire as required with necessary on center spacing to support expected ceiling load requirements, following local practices, codes and regulations. Provide additional wires at light fixtures, grilles, and access doors where necessary. A pigtail knot shall be used with three tight wraps at top and bottom fastening locations. D. Add additional wire as needed when using compatible clips and accessories. THE KENT 09 22 26- THE KENT Issue Date 05.09.18 GYPSUM CEILING SUSPENSION SYSTEM THE KENT E. Control Joints: Roll formed zinc alloy, aluminum or plastic as required for expansion and contraction as shown on drawings. F. Expansion Joints: Roll formed zinc alloy, aluminum or plastic as required for expansion and contraction as shown on drawings. G. Main beams shall be suspended from the overhead construction with hanger wire, spaced as required for expected ceiling loads, along the length of the beam. H. Install cross tees at on center spacing as specified by the drywall manufacturer. Typical drywall cross tee spacing: 1. 16 inches on center with 1/2-inch gypsum board. 2. 24 inches on center with 5/8-inch gypsum board. I. Other items such as wood, sheet metal, or plastic panels should be screwed to comply with deflection limit equivalent to that of the ceiling installation. J. Use channel molding or angle molding to interface with Drywall Grid system to provide perimeter attachment or to obtain drop soffits, verticals, slopes, etc. K. For light fixtures, use secondary framing cross tees as required to frame openings. L. Single cross tees in a route hole to be secured by 7/16-inch framing screw or alternative methods.
