PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A. This section includes:
1. Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable - Types NM, NMC and NMS (600 volts and less) for use
only within dwelling/apartment units.
1.02 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
B. General Requirements specifically applicable to Division 26 in addition to Division 00 and
Division 01 provisions.
C. Section 26 05 00 - Basic Electrical Requirements.

1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Provide Type NM, NMC and NMS cables where specifically allowed by the Contract
Documents.

1.05 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit shop Drawings and Product Data under provisions of Division 01 and Section
26 05 00.
1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Cable provided shall be NRTL certified and shall meet referenced requirements
1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Deliver, Store and handle materials in accordance with Section 26 05 00.
1.08 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING
A. Sequence and Schedule work in accordance with Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.
1.09 WARRANTY
A. Warranty in Accordance with requirements of Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 NONMETALLIC-SHEATHED CABLE - TYPES NM, NMC AND NMS (600 VOLTS AND LESS)

2.02 MATERIAL SELECTION
A. Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable - Types NM-B, NMC and NMS:
1. Uses Permitted: Type NM cable may be used in lieu of conduit and wire for branch
circuiting only within each dwelling/apartment units under the following conditions:
a. Multifamily dwellings permitted to be Types III, IV and V construction except
as prohibited in 334.12. Cables shall be concealed within floors, walls, floors
or ceilings that provide a thermal barrier of material that has at least a 15-
minute finish rating as identified in listings of fire-rated assemblies.
b. NM cables shall be permitted for concealed work in normally dry locations
except as prohibited in 334.10 (3).
c. NMC cables shall be permitted for concealed work in normally dry, moist,
damp or corrosive locations except as prohibited in 334.10 (3).

d. NMS cables shall be permitted for concealed work in normally dry locations
except as prohibited in 334.10(3).
2. Uses Not Permitted:
a. Uses prohibited by the National Electrical Code.
b. Below grade and exterior locations.
c. Switchboard and panelboard feeders.
d. Power transformer primary and secondary feeders.
e. Generator feeders.
f. Finished Areas: Exposed below finished ceilings.
g. Unfinished areas.
h. Within boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, and electrical rooms.
i. Circuits with overcurrent protection ratings greater than 60 amperes.
j. Areas other than the dwelling/apartment Units.
2.03 MATERIALS
A. Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable - Types NM-B, NMC and NMS:
1. Type NM-B, NMC and NMS nonmetallic-sheathed cable shall be constructed in strict
accordance with National Electrical Code Article 334 and Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc., Standard for Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cables.
2. Cable shall meet or exceed UL standard 83, UL Standard 719, Federal Specification
A-A-59544, ASTM-B3, and the requirements of the National Electric Code.
3. Cable shall bear the U.L. label.
4. Cable shall be ARRA 2009; Section 1605 “Buy American” Compliant.
5. Cable Construction:
a. Factory assembly of two or more insulated circuit conductors with bare ground
wire enclosed in a jacketed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheath.
(1) White – 14 AWG.
(2) Yellow – 12 AWG.
(3) Orange – 10 AWG.
(4) Black – 8 AWG and 6 AWG.
b. Cable Conductors:
(1) Conductors used for cables shall be 98 percent conductivity copper.
(2) 600 volt insulation.
(3) Conductor smaller than 14 AWG not permitted.
(4) 8 AWG or larger conductors stranded.
(5) Conductor insulation shall be Type THHN and rated 90 degrees C.
(dry locations) or greater.
(6) Bare equipment grounding conductor.
(7) Additional grounding conductors as required to satisfy requirements
for a low-impedance fault-return path to clear the overcurrent
protection device due to a ground fault.
(8) Provide oversized neutrals as indicated in the Contract Documents.
Separate neutrals per phase may be provided in lieu of oversized
neutrals.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 PERMITTED USES
A. NM Cable Uses Permitted: Type NM cable may be used in lieu of conduit and wire for branch
circuiting only within dwelling/apartment units as indicated under See Paragraph 2.02 of this
Section.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Installation of Type NM-B, NMC AND NMS nonmetallic-sheathed cables shall be in
accordance with Article 334 of the National Electrical Code.
B. Cables shall be protected from physical damage in accordance with the National Electrical
Code. This shall include providing conduit or other enclosed raceway where cables would
otherwise be exposed.
3.03 CONSTRUCTION
A. Splices: Splice only in accessible junction or outlet boxes. Connect conductors 8 AWG and
smaller with compression connectors or wire nuts. Connect conductors 6 AWG and larger
with compression or hy-dent type connectors.
