This section includes: 1. Service-Entrance cable - Type SER (600 volts and less) for use as dwelling/apartment unit wiring. 1.02 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. B. General Requirements specifically applicable to Division 26 in addition to Division 00 and Division 01 provisions. C. Section 26 05 00 - Basic Electrical Requirements. 1.03 REFERENCES A. Review the Drawings and all sections of the Specifications for equipment furnished by other Contractors and the Owner throughout the entire project. B. See References Section in Specification Section 26 05 00. C. UL-83, UL-719 - Safety for Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cables. D. U.L. 1479 - Test Procedure for Through Penetration Fire Rating, E. Federal Specification A-A-59544 – Cable and Wire, Electrical. (Power, Fixed Installation). F. ASTM-B3-01 - Standard Specification for Soft or Annealed Copper Wire. G. NECA/AA 104-2000 – Installing Aluminum Building Wire and Cable. H. ARRA 2009; Section 1605 - “Buy American” Compliant. 1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Provide Type SE, Style R cables where specifically allowed by the Contract Documents. Submit shop Drawings and Product Data under provisions of Division 01 and Section 26 05 00. 1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Cable provided shall be NRTL certified and shall meet referenced requirements 1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver, Store and handle materials in accordance with Section 26 05 00. 1.08 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING A. Sequence and Schedule work in accordance with Division 01 and Section 26 05 00. 1.09 WARRANTY A. Warranty in Accordance with requirements of Division 01 and Section 26 05 00. PART 2 - PRODUCTS# 2.01 SERVICE-ENTRANCE CABLE - TYPE SE and USE (600 VOLTS AND LESS) ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS A. Cerro Wire and Cable Company, Inc. B. Encore Wire Corp. C. General Cable Corporation. D. Southwire Company. 2.02 MATERIAL SELECTION A. Type SE Cable: 1. All Type SE cable shall be Style R (all circuit conductors fully insulated, bare ground). 2. Conductors shall be copper, except aluminum conductors may be used for: a. Panel feeders between service meters and Apartment Unit Panels. b. For electric range outlets rated 40 amperes or greater. 3. Uses Permitted – Panel Feeders: a. Type SE cable is permitted to be used in lieu of conduit and wire for panel feeders between service meters and dwelling/apartment panels. b. Cable shall be installed in accordance with 230.6, 230.7, and Parts II, III and IV of Article 230. Uses Permitted – Branch Circuits: Type SE cable may be used in lieu of conduit and wire for dwelling/apartment unit interior branch circuiting under the following conditions: a. For circuits rated 40 amperes or greater. b. Cables shall be concealed within floors, walls, floors or ceilings that provide a thermal barrier of material that has at least a 15-minute finish rating as identified in listings of fire-rated assemblies. c. SE cables shall be permitted for concealed work in normally dry locations except as prohibited in 338.10. 5. Uses Not Permitted: a. Uses prohibited by the National Electrical Code. b. Below grade and exterior locations. c. Finished Areas: Exposed below finished ceilings. d. Unfinished areas. B. Type USE Cable: The use of Type USE cable is not permitted on this project. 2.03 MATERIALS A. Service Entrance Cables shall be constructed in strict accordance with National Electrical Code Article 338 and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard for Service Entrance Cables. B. The cable shall bear the U.L. label. C. Cable shall have passed U.L. test procedure 1479, Through Penetration Fire Rating. D. Cable shall be a single-conductor or multi-conductor assembly provided with or without an overall covering. E. Type USE Service Entrance Cable, identified for underground use shall have a moisture resistant covering. Not required to have a flame-retardant covering F. Cable Construction: 1. Factory assembly of one or more insulated circuit conductors with reinforcement tape enclosed in a jacketed gray polyvinyl chloride (PVC). 2. Cable Conductors: a. Copper Conductors: Conductors used for cables shall be 98 percent conductivity copper, unless otherwise specifically noted or indicated. b. Aluminum Conductors: (1) Utilize aluminum conductors ONLY where specifically noted or indicated. (2) Conductor material shall be an AA-8000 Series electrical grade aluminum alloy as required by the NEC. (3) Conductors shall be compact stranded type. c. 600 Volt insulation. d. 8 AWG or larger conductors stranded. THE KENT 26 05 23 - 4 THE KENT Issue Date 05.09.18 SERVICE ENTRANCE CABLE TYPE SE AND USE 600 VOLTS OR LESS THE KENT e. Conductor insulation shall be Type XHHW-2 or THHN/THWN and rated 90 degrees C. (dry locations) or greater. f. Insulated green equipment grounding conductor. g. Provide oversized neutrals as indicated in the Contract Documents. Separate neutrals per phase may be provided in lieu of oversized neutrals. h. Rated for 600 Volts. i. Meet or exceed UL standard 44 for XHHW-2 conductors or UL 83 for THHN/THWN conductors, UL Standard 854, Federal Specification A-A-59544 and the requirements of the National Electric Code. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 PERMITTED USES A. Type SE cable is permitted to be used in lieu of conduit and wire for Apartment Panel Feeders between service meters and dwelling/apartment panels as indicated in Paragraph 2.02 of this Section. B. Type SE cable may be used in lieu of conduit and wire for dwelling/apartment unit interior branch circuiting as indicated in Paragraph 2.02 of this Section. 3.02 INSTALLATION OF SERVICE ENTRANCE CABLES (TYPES SE AND USE) A. Installation of the Service Entrance Cables (Types SE and USE) shall be in accordance with Article 338 of the National Electrical Code. B. Cables shall be protected from physical damage in accordance with the National Electrical Code. This shall include providing conduit or other enclosed raceway where cables would otherwise be exposed. 3.03 CONSTRUCTION A. Splices: Splice only in accessible junction or outlet boxes. Connect conductors 8 AWG and smaller with compression connectors or wire nuts. Connect conductors 6 AWG and larger with compression or hy-dent type connectors. END OF SECTION
