SECTION 26 05 43 - HANDHOLES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY:
A. This Section includes the following:
1. Prefabricated composite handholes.

1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:
A. Conform to requirements of ANSI/NFPA 70.
B. Furnish products listed and classified by UL as suitable for purpose specified and shown.
C. The term “in-grade” junction boxes shall mean “handhole”, unless specifically indicated
otherwise
1.05 SUBMITTALS:
A. Submit shop drawings and product data under Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.
B. Indicate dimensions, reinforcement, size and locations of openings, accessory locations for
handholes.
1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Regulatory Requirements:
1. Meet requirements of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
B. Certifications:
1. UL listed for intended application.
1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:
A. Deliver, store and handle materials in accordance with Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.
1.08 PROJECT CONDITIONS:
A. Project Environmental Requirements:
1. Units shall be suitable for deliberate and non-deliberate vehicular traffic possible in
location installed.
2. Verify grading prior to installation.
B. Existing Conditions:
1. Verify soil conditions prior to installation.
1.09 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING:
A. Sequence and schedule work in accordance with Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.
1.10 WARRANTY:
A. Warranty in accordance with requirements of Division 01 and Section 26 05 00.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 COMPOSITE HANDHOLES – MANUFACTURERS:
A. Quazite by Strongwell, Bristol, Virginia.
B. Highline Products, Waltham, Massachusetts.
C. Synerttech Moulded Products, Candiac, Quebec.
2.02 COMPOSITE HANDHOLES:
A. Handhole boxes with bases and covers shall be constructed of polymer concrete and
reinforced by a heavy-weave fiberglass. The color of boxes and covers shall be gray or green.
Boxes with bases and covers to be rated for no less than 8000 pounds over a 10 inch by
10 inch area and designed and tested to temperatures of minus 50 degrees F. Material
compressive strength shall be no less than 11,000 psi. Covers shall be heavy duty type with a
minimum coefficient of friction 0.5 and a design load of 15,000 pounds over a 10 inch by
10 inch area
B. Junction Boxes for Power Wiring: Covers shall have a pre-stamped logo of “Electric” by the
box manufacturer:
1. Unless otherwise indicated, size each box as necessary for the installation
requirements at each box. Boxes shall be Strongwell Quazite “Composolite” “PC” or
“PG” style box with base and heavy duty cover or approved equal.
2. Provide quantity as indicated in the Contract Documents.
C. Junction Boxes for Communications Wiring: Covers shall have a pre-stamped logo of
“Communications” by the box manufacturer:
1. Box dimensions shall be approximately 30”x48”x24” deep. Provide Strongwell Quazite
“Composolite” Model PG3048DA24 box with base and cover or approved equal.
2. Provide quantity as indicated in the Contract Documents.
2.03 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL:
A. Verification of Performance: Handholes shall be load tested in accordance with ANSI/SCTE
77-2002.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION:
A. Verify grading elevations and installation of drainage fill before installing handholes.
3.02 PREPARATION:
A. Surface Preparation:
1. Excavate, install base material, and compact base material in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions under provisions of Division 31.

3.03 INSTALLATION:
A. Install plumb and square with pavement, buildings and other construction, unless specifically
indicated otherwise.
B. Top casting or section of enclosure shall be set level with finished grade, or finished paving,
unless specifically indicated otherwise.
3.04 CONSTRUCTION:
A. Verify exact location of all handholes with Engineer/Architect/Construction Manager prior to
installation.
3.05 REPAIR/RESTORATION:
A. Install plumb and square with pavement, buildings and other construction, unless specifically
indicated otherwise.
3.06 FILED QUALITY CONTROL:
A. Site Tests, Inspection.
B. Manufacturer’s field Service.
3.07 CLEANING:
A. All dirt and debris collected in handholes during construction shall be removed and the floor
box thoroughly cleaned prior to installation of wiring, devices, faceplates, and covers.
3.01 PROTECTION:
A. Maintain protective covers on handholes to protect handholes during construction.
