1.Earth Exploration, Inc. (EEI) was on site at the request of Ron Hueston with Gibraltar Construction to
perform field density testing on asphalt binder placement for the east parking lot and the entrance road.
Upon arrival of the first load of asphalt it was determined that Grady was placing 12.5 mm intermediate
asphalt instead of the specified 19.0 mm intermediate mix as outlined in the project manual. EEI informed
Grady and Gibraltar of this issue and after discussion, Gibraltar directed Grady to continue placement of
the mix. It is understood that the Project Engineer representing the City of Carmel will be reviewing the mix
design of the 12.5 mm mix to determine the suitability of the material.
2.EEI performed field nuclear density testing on the material using the provided Marshal value of 155.1 pcf.
Test results indicated density values ranging from 138.2 to 140.1 pcf meeting the minimum density of 90%
but falling short of the required average of 92%. Core samples will be collected to determine the in-place
density of the material. EEI also noted the subgrade stone was saturated with water prior to paving
beginning. The subgrade appeared to pump and rut during placement of material and the turning of the
trucks around the lot during discharge of the material. EEI noted 90% of parking area had this effect. EEI
noted that the main road coming into park seemed solid with little to no pumping or rutting. Contractor
placed in controlled loose lifts of 2.25”. Asphalt temperature ranged from 240 to 290 degrees during
placement.
