Letter#07 for Docket No. 18030016 Z
2. Franciscan Health Rezone, S-2 to MC (Docket No. 18030016 Z):
* The DOCS insisted that the Petitioner create a concept master plan to show how the Franciscan development could
expand onto the land currently occupied by the Meridian Suburban neighborhood, if those homes "were no longer
located there..." Meridian Suburban is a cohesive, well cared for neighborhood of affordable housing, and it would
be a shame to wipe it out for more commercial development. The Petitioner had stated previously, the desire to
preserve the Meridian Suburban neighborhood as affordable, convenient housing for their employees. He seemed
regretful at having to plan for its demise, since that was not Franciscan's intent. He was given no choice. (Why should
Franciscan Health be asked to make a plan for land that isn't theirs?) The City freely admits that it wants that land for
lucrative Meridian Corridor Employment Node development, so it will undoubtedly encourage a buyout and removal
of this neighborhood, considered to be in the way of more intense development.
This is disturbingly reminiscent of what St. Vincent did to the Lacoma neighborhood near 96th & Spring Mill Road in
order to get their land for an intended, intense hospital campus. The way it was done was shameful.
Who is next? Johnson Addition? Home Place? North Augusta?
Thank you,
Jill H. Meisenheimer and Dee Fox
