The organization is considering presenting Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni or a world premier of Don Freund Star Cross'd Lovers in the Fall of 2019. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni is a beloved opera that is an adaptation of a theatrical play by Tirso de Molina. Moliere's Don Juan inspired Lorenzo da Ponte, the librettist, to write this timeless libretto based on the character, Don Giovanni, who rails against God and society. The musical genius of Mozart is on full display, which can be heard in the opening overture; which exhibits the works transcendental dimensions. This classical opera is a perfect example of drama giocoso, which is a blend of serious and comedic opera. Don Giovanni is a standard Italian repertory for opera houses worldwide. A new American Opera, Star-Cross'd Lovers, by renowned Indiana composer, Don Freund. This story has been told and re -told in various genres and languages throughout the centuries, capturing the emotions and imaginations of audiences the world over. In his new opera, Star-Cross'd Lovers, composer Don Freund has written the first ever staged opera of Shakespearean's English - Romeo and Juliet. Opera audiences are familiar with popular interpretations of the story in French Grand Opera, Italian bel canto, and Bernstein's transformed story in an American Jazz - influenced style. Now, Star-Cross'd Lovers lands where the story began, presenting the archetypal tale of Romeo and Juliet with a revolutionary modern musical score. The world premiere of Star Cross'd Lovers would highlight the new direct of modern opera. In late 2015, IO discovered that 46% of its audience travels from Carmel to experience opera in Indianapolis. Therefore for the there years IO has taken that insight using it to embrace and build this audience group. IO selected The Booth Tarkington Theatre because the space is ideal to experience intimate opera and the audience base is accustomed to seeing theatre. For the past few years, IO has continued to make a concerted effort to build awareness in the community, especially in outreach efforts with Current in Carmel. As a result of awareness building activities, a total of 1160 tickets - singles, group, and subscription - sold for the three -show run of Puccini's La BoWme. In 2018, IO continued building its relationship with The Tarkington and the City of Carmel, resulting in steady and growing number of tickets sold and sold out performances. IO's mission is to educate, inspire and entertain through the creation and presentation of musical storytelling for the Hoosier community. IO brings the passion, excitement, and art of opera to Indiana. Centrally located and the only professional opera company in the state, I0 delivers the opera experience to people of all ages, creeds, racial and ethnic groups, gender and socioeconomic backgrounds. November 27, 2018 City of Carmel Office of the Mayor Attn: Mayor Jim Brainard One Civic Square Carmel, Indiana 46032 Dear Mayor Brainard, On behalf of the Indianapolis Opera we are submitting our grant proposal for the year of 2018 for an Opera presentation at Booth Tarkington Theater. Let us begin by giving you a brief year- end report (EXHIBIT G). Through the funds provided by you, we held three performances of La Boheme at Booth Tarkington Theater on September 14`h, 15`h, and 16`h with a budget of $150,000. Your generous $8,000 grant was applied to marketing expenses for the City of Carmel and Hamilton County. You can see those efforts translated into growing ticket sales, generating 1160 tickets sold. The performances were well received. Don Grossman, Novo said, " These performances were first rate all the way around." In addition, we partnered your grant with other funds to help with education initiatives. These funds helped students of all ages and backgrounds attend our performances. It was an honor to present our Opera productions in Booth Tarkington Theatre. It is our desire to reapply because we believe that we had successes in the areas of production, marketing, ticket sales, and audience response. For the year 2019, the cost of the Don Giovanni and/or Star Cross'd Lovers project around production and marketing is $150,000 (EXHIBIT B). Our revenues for this project will be through ticket sales of $55,000, grant estimation of around $20,000 ($11,000 grant applied) $20,000 in sponsorships, and $75,000 in contributed income. With acceptance of your grant, we wish to apply the funds of $10,000 in the direction of expanding the audience base specifically in Carmel and Hamilton County.
