This year we are asking for $16,500 to support particular costs of Collections Management, Marketing, Programming, and Operations. In particular, we have a dire situation in that our master control system for the display lights is not fully functioning and must be replaced. The museum's collection shows the relationship of scale miniature reproductions to history, architecture, fine arts, and the decorative arts. Approximately one-third of our visitors come from Carmel and the immediate surrounding area. Another third comprises visitors from around the state of Indiana, while the last third is composed of individuals from other states. Thus far in 2018, we have had 43 states represented. We now mount at least six exhibits per year. For four years, we have hosted Carmel High School's Minumentals winners. This is a contest for CHS art students to create artworks no larger than 1" by 1" by 1" illustrating a particular theme. The museum exhibits the winning pieces for one month and hosts an opening evening reception for the public, CHS students, their families and friends, and their teachers. Other exhibits in 2018 included The Design Genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, The Arts in Miniature, the spectacular Sahlberg house, and the Founders Exhibit in honor of the museum's 25th anniversary. Toward the end of last year, we redesigned our web site to make it more interactive and easily navigable. We average 5,000 visitors a month to the site. Additonally, we have a Pinterest presence with nearly 800 pins, a Facebook page with 1491Likes, and an Instagram presence with 143 posts and 711 followers. We provide ongoing arts events: our Celebrations of Creativity and Craftsmanship series (every other week) and our workshops (2-3 times a year) and a third activity called Breyer Fun Day that entails painting plastic horses to learn what colors and tones exist in real life and how to reproduce them in paint (took place three times in 2018). All three of these are open to the public and to persons with disabilities, as our museum is handicapped accessible. While anyone is invited to attend our free Celebration events, we tailor our workshops to levels of expertise (beginner, intermediate, experienced) in order to serve our participants in the best manner. In addition, we offer "create your own art" workshops during school holidays where people of all ages are provided with materials to paint, draw, or construct original artwork. We are excited to announce a new culturally significant activity in 2019: Create a Kachina Doll. The museum is planning three or four sessions and will provide all materials and instruction for guests to make their own kachina dolls. Our Celebrations of Creativity and Craftsmanship series highlights both the imagination and the detailed work in the museum's collection. These programs occur on a bi-weekly basis and are free to the public. We have had musicians: Singers/songwriters, guitarists and a cappella singers; literary artists: novelists, short story writers, and poets; and fine artists: painters, sculptors, glass workers, and textile artists all demonstrate their creativity and craftsmanship, and shows the close similarity to the art of making miniatures. Through these programs, the museum is also able to support and find new audiences for our guest artists. In 2018 we were able to give them small stipends as well, thanks to a grant from the Central Indiana Community Foundation. Sincerely, Elaine C.
