This graphic on the wing is a Korean word (Effj�)that means 'Tae Kwon Do', which is the Martial Art we teach. While we were creating design ideas for the Art Deco, we thought that adding some decorations like graphics and symbols to the otherwise plain Efis wall would make the building more fascinating and unique. If we were to keep the (3) allowed sign areas and remove (1)graphic from the wing, the overall design wouldn't look as balanced. We will also be the only occupant of the building, so there won't be any other exterior signs. As a whole, we understand how Carmel and the Village of Westclay wants to keep our neighborhood beautiful and neat. We strongly believe that our new building will be a nice addition to our city, and people are already talking about the impressive look of our building. Please allow us to increase the sign areas to 60.1 square foot for letters and logo on North and East elevation as well as adding(1) more location for EH ,I graphic on the Wing on the South elevation. November 28, 2018 Dear Sir or Madam, On behalf of the Peripheral Retail Area review board, I am writing to confirm that the board supports a signage variance for the Master Yoo's Tae Kwon Do building currently under construction on Harleston Street. The initial signage submittal showed 28" tall letters, which is within the guidelines, but this created a signage area greater then the allowable 45 sq. ft. If the signage regulations were enforced, the letter size would have to be reduced to 12" or less, which the board believes is much too small for the overall scale of the building. Therefore, the review board is proposing a compromise. They are supporting the use of 24" letters, slightly smaller than the 28" maximum allowed. This would still create a signage area greater than 45 sq. ft., but not look completely out of scale for the building. The approval of this variance will not be injurious to the public health, safety, morals and general welfare of the community because: We try to increase the wall sign area from 45 square foot to 60 square foot and to add (1) more sign location to add the graphic for the Art Deco style. These variances affect the appearance of the building, and not the safety of community. 2. The use and value of the area adjacent to the property included in the variance will not be affected in a substantially adverse manner because: The architectural theme of the property is the Art Deco style (or Modern Art) and our sign variance will be consistent with the overall theme. Our signs will highlight a more impressive look of the building and property. 3. The strict application of the terms of the Unified Development Ordinance to the property will result in practical difficulties in the use of the property because: If the signage regulation was enforced, the letter size would need to be reduced to 12" or less, which is too small for the overall scale of the building (12,000 square foot). Also, if we remove one graphic from one side of the wing, the overall design wouldn't look as balanced. DECISION It is therefore the decision of the Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals that Development Standards Variance Docket No. 18120004V&18120005V is granted, subject to any conditions stated in the minutes of this Board, which are incorporated herein by reference and made a part hereof.
