WATER LINE SPECIFICATIONS
1. SCOPE OF WORK
1A. THE WORK REOJI RED UNDER FIT S SECTION INCLUDED ALL COLD WATER DISTRIBUTION
LINES. VALVES, N3ER PITS, HYDRANTS, AND RELATED ITEMS INCLUDING EXCAVATING AND
BACKFILLING NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE WORK SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. THE END
OF WATER SERVICE LINES SHALL BE TIGHTLY PLUGGED OR CAPPED AT THE TERMINAL
POINTS PENDING THE CONNECTING TO ALL SUCH LINES OF THE BUILDING PIPING AS
SPECIFIED IN THE PLUMBING SPECIFICATIONS AND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS.
2. MATERIALS
2A. DUCTILEIRONPIPE: DUCTILE IRON PIPE SHALL MEET AWWA C-150 AND G151
SPECIFICATIONS. PIPE SHALL BE CEMENT LINED PER AWWA C 104.
2S COPPERTUBING'. SHALL BE SEAMLESS. ANNEALED COPPER TUBING COMPLYING WITH
FEDERAL SPECIFICATION SAN 799. FITTINGS SHALL BE WROUGHT COPPER OR CAST
BRONZE WITH SOLDER JOINTS. SOLDER SHALL BE OF A COMPOSITION RECOMMENDED BY
THE MANUFACTURER OF THE FITTINGS.
2.C. FIREHYORANTS. SHALL COMPLY WITH AWWA SPECIFICATION G502 AND SHALL MEET
LOCAL STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS, PARTICULARLY AS TO NOZZLE DIAMETERS AND
THREADS, DIRECTION OF OPENING AND DIMENSIONS OF OPERATING AND CAP NUTS. FIRE
HYDRANTS SHALL HAVE ONE PUMPER AND TWO HOSE NOZZLES. A VALVE OPENING NOT
LESS THAN 51NCHES ME A6INCH INLET CONNECTION. THE LENGTH OF THE HYDRANT
BARRFI SHAI I BE DETERMINED BY THE SPECIFIED DEPTH OF COVER OVER THE PIPE.
2.0, VALVES: ALL VALVES AND STOPS SHALL HAVE ENDS SUITED OR ADAPTERS SHALL BE
PROVIDED FOR THE PROPER INSTALLATION IN THE LINES IN WHICH THEY ARE LOCATED.

3. APPLICATIONS.

CONTRACTOR'S BID ON THE WORK COVERED HEREIN SHALL BE BASED UPON THE
DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS BUT THAT THE WORK SHALL COMPLY WITH ALL
APPLICABLE CODES AND REGULATIONS. CONTRACTOR SHALL FURNISH ALL NECESSARY
BONDS TO GET PERMITS FOR CUTS AND CONNECTIONS.
3.B. EXISTING IMPROVEMENTS: MAINTAIN IN OPERATING CONDITION ALL ACTIVE UTILITIES AND
SEWERS AND OTHER PIPE SYSTEM THAT MAY BE ENCOUNTERED.
&C. TRENCHING: LAY ALL PIPE IN OPEN TRENCHES, EXCEPT WHEN LOCAL AUTHORITY GIVES
WRITTEN PERMISSION FOR TUNNELING. PROVIDE SEPARATE TRENCH FOR THE WATERLINE
AT LEAST 10 FEET HORIZONTALLY FROM ANY SANITARY SEWER. IN LOCATIONS WHERE
SEPARATE TRENCHES FOR SEWER AND WATER LINES ARE IMPRACTICABLE, LAYTHE
WATER PIPE ON A SOLD SHELF AT LEAST 18INCHES ABOVE THE TOP OF THE SEWER,
3.D. WIDTHOFTRENCH: EXCAVATE TRENCHES 12 INCHES EACH SIDE OF THE PIPE FOR
PROPER INSTALLATION OF PIPE.
3E. SHEETING AND BRACING: SHEET AND BRACE TRENCHES AS NECESSARY TO PROTECT
WORKMEN AND ADJACENT STRUCTURES. ALL TRENCHING SHALL COMPLY WITH THE
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION STANDARDS.
3F. WATERREMOVAL. KEEP TRENCHES FREE FROM WATER WHILE CONSTRUCTION THEREIN IS
IN PROGRESS. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES LAY PIPE OR APPURTENANCES IN STANDING
WATER. CONDUCTTHE DISCHARGE FROM TRENCH DEWATERING TO DRAINS, OR NATURAL

3.13. GRADING TRENCH BOTTOMS'. THE BOTTOM QUADRANT OF THE PIPE SHALL BE FULLY AND
UNIFORMLY SUPPORTED. THE FULL LOAD SHALL REST ON THE BARREL OF THE PIPE. THE
TRENCH MAY BE EXCAVATED TO A DEPTH OF 41NCHES OR MORE BELOW FINAL GRADE
WITH SAND, CRUSHED STONE OR GRAVEL BACKFILL TO BRING IT BACK TO PIPE TRYING
GRADE. FOR A DEPTH OF AT LEAST 12 INCHES ABOVE THE TOP OF THE PIPE BACKFILL
WITH EARTH OR GRANULAR MATERIAL FREE FROM LARGE STONES, ROOTS OR FROZEN
CLOGS. TAMP THIS BACKFILL THOROUGHLY TAKING CARE NOT TO DISTURB THE PIPE.
BACKFILL UNDER WALKS, PARKING AREAS ORIVEWIAYS AND STREETS WITH GRANULAR
MATERIAL ONLY AND TAMP THOROUGHLY, BY APPROVED METHODS. TRENCHES PARALLEL
TO AND WITHIN 10 FEET OF PAVED ROADWAYS SHALL ALSO BE CONSTRUCTED WITH

BE. TESTS: BEFORE JOINTS ME COVERED, FILL THE PIPING WITH WATER, OPENING HYDRANTS
OR OTHER OUTLETS TO EXPELAIR. TEST THE PIPING FOR LEAKAGE AS REQUIRED BY THE
LOCAL UTILITY. INSPECT ALL JOINTS FOR LEAKAGE AND REMEDY ANY LEAKS. UPON
COMPLETION OF THE WATER LINES, FLUSH OUT THE SYSTEM UNTIL THE WATER RUNS
CLEAR. AS SOON AS THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN FLUSHED OUT, IT SHALL BE STERILIZED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LOCAL UTILITY.
31 IF A HORIZONTAL DISTANCE OF IO FEET CANNOT BE MAI NTAINED BETWEEN THE WATER
LINE AND THE SANITARY SEWER LINE, THE SEWER MUST BE CONSTRUCTED OF WATER
WORKS GRADE DUCTILE IRON PIPE WITH MECHANICAL JOINTS WITHIN 1C OF EITHER SIDE
THE WATER LINE.
3J. UTILITIES: IT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY ALL
EXISTING UTILITIES AND CONDITIONS PERTAINING TO HIS PHASE OF THE WORK. IT SHALL
ALSO BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE OWNERS OF THE
VARIOUS UTILITIES BEFORE WORK 15 STARTED. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY IN

DEFECTS AND CRACKS BEFORE BEING LOWERED INTO THE TRENCH. DEFECTIVE,
DAMAGED OR UNSOUND PIPE, OR PIPE THAT HAS HAD ITS GRADE DISTURBED AFTER
LAYING SHALL BETAKEN UP AND REPLACED. COMMENCE INSTALLATION AT LOWEST
POINT WITH THE BILL CND UPGRADE,
4B. NO PIPE SHALL BE LAID IN WATER OR WHEN TRENCH CONDITIONS ARE UNSUITABLE FOR

6. FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
6.A. FIELD QUALITY CONTROL SHALL BE CONDUCTED BY THE CONTRACTOR IN ACCORDANCE
WITH SECTION 01452.
AD PIPES AND JOINTS SHALL NOT BE COMPLETELY BACKFILLED UNTIL AFTER INSPECTION,
TESTING, AND APPROVAL BY THE OWNER AND LOCAL JURISDICTION.
B.C. PRIOR TO TESTING FOR LEAKAGE, THE PIPE TRENCH SHALL BE BACKFILLED TO AT LEAST
THE SPRING LINE OF THE PIPE. IF REQUIRED TO PREVENT PIPE MOVEMENT DURING
TESTING, ADDITIONAL BACKFILL SHALL BE ADDED LEAVING THE PIPE JOINTS UNCOVERED
TO PERMIT INSPECTION.
6D. EXFILTRATICN TEST
6D1. EACH SECTION OF SEWER LINE BETISEEK SUCCESSIVE MANHOLES SHALL BE
TESTED BY CLOSING THE LOWER END OF -HE SEWER TO BE TESTED AND THE INLET
SEWER OF THE UPPER MANHOLE, USING STOPPERS.
6D2. FILL THE MANHOLE AND PIPE WITH WATER TO A POINT WHICH PRODUCES
MAXIMUM OF 3 FEET OF HEAD ABOVE THE INVERT OF THE SEWER AT THE CENTER OF
THE UPPER MANHOLE: OR IF GROUNDWATER IS PRESENT, 3 FEET OF HEAD ABOVE
THE AVERAGE ADJACENT GROUNDWATER LEVEL.
KD3. THE ALLOWABLE LEAKAGE SHALL BE 200 GALIINCH OF PIPE DIAMETERMILEIDAY
BE. INFILTRATION TEST
6E.1. IF EXCESSIVE GROUND WATER IS ENCOUNTERED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A
SECTION OF THE SEWER, THE EXHUMATION TEST SHALL NOT BE USED.
6.E2. TH`_ UPPER AND LOWER ENDS OF THE SEWER TO BE TESTED SHALL BE CLOSED
SUFFICIENTLY TO PREVENT THE ENTRANCE OF WATER.
IE3. PUMPING OF GROUND WATER SHALL BE DISCONTINUED FOR AT LEAST 3 DAYS; THEN
INFILTRATION SHALL BE TESTED.
6.E4. INFILTRATION INTO EACH SECTION OF SEWER BETWEEN ADJOINING MANHOLES
SHALL NOT EXCEED THAT ALLOWED FOR THE EXHITTRATION TEST, EXCEPT THAT
HEAD CONDITIONS SHALL BE A MAXIMUM OF 6 FEET.
6F. THE EXHIMATION TEST MAY BE LIMITED TO THE MANHOLES ONLY WH EN THE
AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION DOES NOT REQUIRE THE TEST AND THE
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER WAIVES THE TEST. THE INFILTRATION TEST WILL ALWAYS BE
REWIRED WHEN EXCESSIVE GROUNDWATER IS ENCOUNTERED IN ADOMON TO THE AIR
TEST.
BIG AIR TEST'. GRAVITY SYSTEMS SHALL BE AIR TESTED BETWEEN MANHOLES AT 35 PSI FOR
5 MINUTES PER ASTM F1417 FOR PLASTIC PIPES.
6IT ALL MANHOLES SHALL BE AIR TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM C1244-93 (STANDARD
TEST METHOD FOR CONCRETE SEWER MANHOLES BY NEGATIVE AIR PRESSURE

614. PROCEDURE'. MANDREL SHALL BE HAND -PULLED THROUGH FLEXIBLE PIPE SEWER
LINES NO EARLIER THAN 30 DAYS AFTER TRENCH HAS BEEN COMPLETELY
BACKFILLED. SECTIONS OF SEWER NOT PASSING MANDREL SHALL BE UNCOVERED
AND REBEDOED, REBOUNDED, OR REPLACED TO SATISFACTION OF OWNER OR
GOVERNING AGENCY. REPAIRED SECTION SMALL BE RETESTED.
SL HYDROSTATICTEST. FORCE MAIN PIPING SHALL BE HYDROSTATICALLY TESTED AT 150
PSI IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMA C 600.
BA PROVIDE MEASURING DEVICES METERS, WATER MATERIALS, AND LABOR FOR MAKING
THE REQUIRED TESTS.
AL. TESTS SMALL BE CONDUCTED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR
