DEPARTMENT REPORT
JUNE 24, 2019
(V) 5501 E. Main St. Guest House.
The applicant seeks the following development standards variance approval to move an existing historic
house from 241 1st Ave SE to this site:
7. Docket No. 19050031 V UDO Section 5.02 Guest house on ≥ 1acre allowed; 0.80 acre
requested. (With existing building height & footprint.) The site is located at 5501 E. Main St. It is
zoned S1/Residence. Filed by Sam Burgess of the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission, on behalf
of Joseph & Kristi Bishop, owners.
General Info & Analysis:
The Petitioner seeks variance approval to have a guest house on a parcel of land that is 0.8 acres in size. The
minimum requirement is 1 acre. Please see the Petitioner’s informational packet for more detail on the
variance request.
The Petitioner is working with the Carmel Historic Preservation Commission and Indiana Landmarks to have a
historic house that was built in the early 1900’s moved from Old Town (241 1st Ave SE) to this site. They
owners plan to restore and renovate the historic house and use it as a guest house.
The Planning Dept. supports this variance request.
Remaining Comments:
The only item left the Petitioner needs to address is the following: Please provide the filled out & notarized
Placement of Public Notice Sign Placement Affidavit (which can be found in the Application).
