HomeMy WebLinkAboutBuilding DesignFor the Off-Campus Emergency Department building we have selected the Federalist style including its simplified expressions of classical proportioning and stripped-down ornamentation. Per the Corridor Overlay, the primary building elements are red brick and limestone (base) with accents of limestone and EIFS cornices. The building height is at least 1.5 stories high (22’) to the lowest parapet with a gabled front entrance feature as shown on the elevations. The building facades include projecting offsets of not less than 8’ deep. Federalist Style Features: The building facades follow proportional guidelines of base, middle & top, a concept that connects Federalist architecture back to its classical roots and is incorporated in a simplified manner which is consistent with Federalist traditions. Symmetry, another concept which Federalism can trace back to its classical roots is incorporated wherever possible with localized symmetries (symmetry limited to a certain area or element). Some of the other identifiable features of the Federalist style which have been incorporated into the design include: · Symmetrical forms and fenestrations (windows) · Arched fan light (fan shaped window) over front entrance · Side lights (narrow windows) flanking front door · Cornice with decorative moldings (ie dentils on main entrance gable) · Segmented windows (proportions reminiscent of double hung windows) · Flat Lintels over windows · Tri-part (Palladian) window with arched top · Decorative front entry portico (reminiscent of a front porch) Please find attached an exhibit of the elevations with the features noted.
