GROUNDING AND BONDING REQUIREMENTS FOR SWIMMING
POOL AND DECK APPLIANCES:
ALL METAL STRUCTURES, FITTINGS AND PARTS THAT ARE HORIZONTALLY
WITHIN FIVE FEET OF THE POOL WALL AND VERTICALLY WITHIN TWELVE FEET
ABOVE THE MAXIMUM WATER LEVEL OF THE POOL SHALL BE BONDED PER THE
SECTION 680.261 OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE (NEC) 2011 CODE.
THE FOLLOWING PARTS REQUIRE BONDING (BUT NOT NECESSARILY LIMITED
TO):
REINFORCING METAL OF THE POOL SHELL, COPING STONES AND DECK.
METAL CONDUITS, METAL DOOR FRAMES AND METAL WINDOW FRAMES
WITHIN FIVE FEET OF THE INSIDE POOL WALL.
METAL FORMING SHELLS AND MOUNTING BRACKETS OF LIGHTING
FIXTURES.
METAL FITTINGS SUCH AS HANDRAILS, LADDERS, METAL DRAINS AND
DIVING BOARD (IF INSTALLED).
METAL CASINGS OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT SUCH AS PUMP MOTORS,
POOL WATER HEATERS AND EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATED WITH POOL
COVERS.
CONNECT METAL PARTS TO A COMMON BONDING GRID THAT COVERS THE
ENTIRE POOL TUB. THIS EQUIPOTENTIAL GRID SHALL EXTEND HORIZONTALLY
UNDER THE DECK FOR NOT LESS THAN THREE FEET.
ITEMS THAT CAN BE USED AS THE EQUIPOTENTIAL GRID PER THE CODE ARE:
STRUCTURAL REINFORCING STEEL
BOLTED OR WELDED CONNECTIONS.
FIELD FABRICATED GRID CONSTRUCTED WITH A MINIMUM 8 AWG BARE
SOLID COPPER CONDUCTORS FORA CONCRETE POOL AND DECK WITH
NO REINFORCING METAL.
BOND REBAR OR WIRE MESH WITH #8 AWG GARE SOLID COPPER CONDUCTOR
AT A MINIMUM OR FOUR POINTS UNIFORMLY SPACED AROUND THE PERIMETER
OF THE POOL WITH U.L. LISTED SPLICES. LOCATE SPLICES 18"-24" FROM THE
INSIDE WALLS OF THE POOL. LOCATE THE #8 BONDING CONDUCTOR WITHIN
THE CONCRETE SLAB OR 4" TO 6" BELOW THE SUB -GRADE.
ALL BONDING SHALL BE DONE WITH #8 OR LARGER SOLID COPPER WIRE.
USE NON -CORROSIVE CLAMPS LISTED AND STAMPED ON THE CONNECTORS.

ANY CONVENIENCE OUTLETS IN THE AREA SHALL BE GFIC PROTECTED IN A #8 AWG
WEATHER-PROOF BOX WITH AN "IN -USE COVER' WIRE
