RE: FIRST FLOOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL — STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
Thank you for allowing Leibering Structural Engineering to provide structural engineering services at the residence
located at 3587 Larkspur Lane in Carmel, Indiana. The homeowner is currently remodeling the first floor and would
like to remove a load -bearing wall to open the existing kitchen area.

The scope of this project included an analysis to determine what type and size of beam should be used to replace
the existing load -bearing wall. The scope included a visual inspection and as -built measurements of the existing
first -floor dimensions and basement load -bearing locations. Only those areas readily available and easily
accessible at the time of inspection were included. The site visit was completed on September 9, 2019.

The existing second -floor joists are supported in multiple locations, one of which is the load -bearing wall being
removed. The wall is approximately 10'-8" long and the tributary area of the framing above is approximately 15'-
0" total. This certification assumes there is a beam in the first -floor framing directly below the wall being replaced
that will adequately support the new bearing locations of the proposed beam. The contractor must contact LSE
during construction and after the floor beam has been exposed. LSE will then verify the structural adequacy of
the existing beam to support the new bearing locations and will determine if any reinforcing is needed.
Design Criteria
The new framing design uses a live load of 40psf, a dead load of 10psf, and a minimum total deflection of 0.25".
The new beam will be installed under the existing floor joists.
De i n
The new beam will be a wood LVL beam design. It must consist of a minimum of (2) 11 W LVLs. A 4x4 post or (3)
2x4s must be used forbearing on each end. All of the existing second -floor joists must be toenailed to the top of
the new LVL beam to ensure the new beam is laterally stable.

Please note that the inspection was only visual in nature, and there was no material testing or sampling of any
components of the fire escapes. Also note that this inspection only considered the overall performance of the
framing system as described above. The observations and recommendations are professional opinions based on
engineering principles and evidence visible at the time of the inspection. Further information such as soil analysis,
material samples, and load -testing would be required to confirm the opinions or calculate the exact structural
capacity of building components as they exist today. Lastly, please note that due to the subjective nature of this
work, it is possible for other professionals to have differing opinions or interpretations of the abovementioned
observations.
Sir➢cerely,
