Dwing the visit the homeowner, Steve the contractor, Jeff Reed of Carmel Kitchens and you were present. Steve indicated that the owner wished to remove a column near the door ro the garage and a beam below the ceiling in the kitchen azea and replace them with framing above the ceiling and in the attic to create an open space free from obstructions. I was able to access the attic space through a pull down ladder in the gazage. T'he roof framing is a ridge and rafter system with collar tie beams on altemate fiames. The ridge beam is a 2x8, and the sloped rafters and ceiling support stringers are 2x6 members. The frames are spaced at l6 inches on cerrters. Installation of the new beam directly above the ceiling and spanning perpendiculaz to the frames near the center of their span will require cutting the ceiling stringers, which currently extend from ecterior wall to exterior wall. These stringers and the collar tie beams resist the outward thrust created with loads placed on the sloped roof rafters. The cut stringers need to be tied together with a steel strap on the bottoms with naits on each side of the new beam to restore the resistance to the thrust. In addition, new collar tie beams should be added to any frames within the length of the new beam that do not currently have ties to assist the cziling joists. The sizing of the new main beams is to be performed by others and is not included in the scope of my work. The sketch below shows the required connectors and framing. ..,ilil.;il'Cll. `' l.ili!li1l t ... . '•.'lllr!.1 I".i i.i1,, 7.
