CARMEL BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS | HEARING OFFICER
DEPARTMENT REPORT
JANUARY 27, 2019
(V) Caliber Collision Signage.
The applicant seeks the following development standards variance approval:
7. Docket No. 19100021 V UDO Section 5.39 1 sign allowed, 2 requested. The site is
located at 503 W. Carmel Dr. (former Abra Auto Body & Glass and Hubler Express Collision site). It is
zoned I1/Industrial. Filed by Linda Thompson of Cree Industrial Arts.
General Info & Analysis:
The Petitioner seeks variance approval to have a second sign for the site (the ground sign along Carmel Drive).
The site has one street frontage, and only one sign is allowed. A wall sign currently exists on the building.
Please see the Petitioner’s informational packet for more detail on the variance request.
Prior variance approval was granted for the ground sign to be an off premise sign. It was approved in 2008
(BZA docket no. 08010021 V) and remains in effect because a sign continued to exist at the location. The
variance request today is for the site to have a total of two signs – a ground sign and a wall sign – when only
one is allowed.
The existing Caliber building is tucked behind the Ritron building, close to 673 feet south of Carmel Drive.
(For reference, a football field is 300 feet in length.) The ground sign along Carmel Drive will aid in identifying
this business location from the street.
The Planning Dept. supports this variance request, pending the Petitioner addressing the remaining review
comments:
1. On the sign design exhibit, please draw a box around the sign copy and provide the maximum vertical
and horizontal dimensions. This is will determine the sign area for the ground sign.
2. Please confirm that actual brick will be used for the base.
3. Please confirm that only the sign copy and rainbow strip will illuminate at night.
Petitioner’s Findings of Fact:
Please refer to the petitioner’s Findings of Facts included in their info packet.
Recommendation:
After all comments and concerns are addressed, the Dept. of Community Services recommends positive
consideration of Docket No. 19100021V.
