The root llare may be hidden within Ihe root ball.) • Dig ihe planting hole [o ihis depth and at leas[ iwo times [he diame[er of [he root ball wide. • Break up the sides ot the planting hole to avoid glazing. Leave �he botlom of the hole undisWrbed to help support it and reduce settling. • Before the tree is placed in the planting hole, use bolt cutters to remove ihe boHom of [he basket cutting [he basket horimntally. This is also a good time to remove Ihe bottom portion of burlap if the root ball is stmcturally sound. If the iree is container growq cut and remove [he con[ainer. • Roll [he [ree into planting hole by ihe root ball, not lhe [mnk. Be careful no� �o break off Ihe connection between the roots and hunk. (The root llare should be at orslightty above finish grade.) • Balance the tree upright, siraight and center. Visualry check from iwo opposing 90 degree sides tor siraighiness. Make any adjustmenis using shovels to position the root ball fOr Straigh[ [runk Orienta�ion. DO not make adlustmen[S by manipulating the trunk. • Use 6olt cutlers to remove the rest ot the wire 6asket by cutling ihe basket verticalty and peeling off the baske�. • Remove any remaining package material including twine, strings. budap, staples, nails, or plastiq exposing the root ball. • Prune dead or crushed roots and straighten or cut circling roots. Make clean cuts to promote new root genera�ion. • Back�ill using �he exis[ing Soil up [o where ihe ro01 flare begins [o branCh, gently [amp. Fill soil just above where roots begin to laterally branch from ihe trunk (A hee planted even 1"too deep may Inrm a dyslunctional root system). • Prune only dead, broken, injured branches or double leaders. Do not paint wounds. • Remove any atlditional iransportation material including tree wrap, tape antl siring from [he �mnk. • Pour five �o �en gallons ot water slowly around �he tree to eliminate any air pockets. • Stake and brace the iree, if necessary. Support the iree but allow it to move or sway. • Mulch evenly with 2- 3" of hardwood mulch at least m ihe diameter iree crown. Keep mulch 3" away from �he trunk. • Fertilize the hee only after ihe Iree has been ins�alled for one year. Finish grade. `�,�,,,o,� , CITY OF CARMEL URBAN FORESTRY Street Tree Planting Specifications The purpose of lhese specifcations is to ensure that trees to be planletl upon public grountls and the public right of ways are pmperly main�ained and preserved lo pro�ec� their economiq aes�he�iq antl ecological beneft lo lhe city of Carmel and ils resitlenls. (a) Street Uees to be plantetl in a street righ4of-way musl frst be approved by the city forester. Approved plan�ings mus� be main�ained for one year aker the �rees are planted and any Uees which fail to survive or tlo not exhibit normal growth charecteristics of healih antl vigor within lhe one year period must be removed at the expense of �he ins�aller. The one year periotl shall begin after lhe preliminary inspection and shall recommence as trees are replacetl. Upon completion of a street iree planting, the installer shall contact ihe city for an inspeclion. The guarantee period shall begin after Ihe approval of the city and a fnal inspection shall be made at the entl of the guarantee period. (b) New street iree plantings are to be aligned with neighboring trees providetl that the neighboring trees meel Ihe distances men�ioned below. (c) Maximum spacing behveen street �rees shall be ffly (50) feet wilh a minimum of hventy-five (25) feet. 7he city forester may require wider spacing if it is necessary for the development of the tree or for safe use of �he stree[ or sidewalk. When space is limited or �o achieve certain design effects, closer spacing may be considered. (d) At residential intersections, plant material with mature height of greater than 36 inches above lhe established street grade shall not be plan[ed wi[hin �he hiangular space a� ihe s[reet comer. The street grede is measured at the intersection of the centerlines of the intersecting street pavemen�, and Ihe triangular space is determined by a diagonal line connec[ing hvo (2) points measured fiReen (15) feet equidistant from ihe lot comer along each property line at inlersec�ions of two (2) residenlial sUeets or �wenty-five (25) fee� al lhe intersec[ion of any other rypes of streets, except where engineering standards indicate otherwise. (e) Street trees are nol permitted where ihe dislance between ihe curb and detached sidewalk is less than 5 feet. In addition, a planting area defined by tow wrbs, wrb and fence, or sidewalk and fence must be 5 feet wide. (� Small growing trees (maturing to 15 ieet or less) can be planted directy undemeath distribution power lines. Medium sized trees (maturing to 16 to 40 feel) musl be planted at least 30 feel from tlistribution power lines Large growing irees (maturing to 40 feet or more) can be planted atleasl40 feetfmm disUibution powerlines in orderto avoid fuWre pruning.
