> Measure the distance from ihe base of the root flare to the bottom of the root ball
to determine he depth of ihe planting hole. (The root llare should 6e at finish

hidden within the root ball.)
• Dig the planting hole to this depth and at least two times ihe diameter of the root ball

portion of burlap if ihe root ball is simcNrally sound. If the iree is container grown, cut
and remove ihe container.
• Roll the hee into planting hole by the root ball, not ihe tmnk. Be careful not to break off
ihe connection between the roots and tmnk. (The root llare should be at orslighNy above
iinish grade.)
• Balance the iree upright, siraight and center. Visualry check from two opposing 90
degree sides for straighness. Make any adjus[ments using shovels o posi[ion he root
ball for straight trunk orientation. Do not make adjusiments by manipulating the trunk.
• Use bolt wtters [o remove the rest of ihe wire baske[ by cutling the basket vertiwlly and
peeling off ihe basket.
• Remove any remaining package maerial including twine, s[rings, budap, saples, nails,
or plastic, exposing ihe root ball.
• Prune dead or croshed roots and straighten or cut circling roots. Make clean cuts to
promote new root generation.
• Backfill using the existing soil up to where ihe rwt ilare begins o branch, gently amp.
Fill soil just above where roots begin to laterally branch from the Vunk (A tree planted
even i"too deep may /orm a dyslunc[ional roo[ system).
