DISPATCH divvy, Pedcor ‘Feeding Neighbors’ GIVING BACK By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel City Center restaurant divvy is partnering with Pedcor Companies to launch Feeding Neighbors, a program that will provide meals for families in Hamilton and Marion counties im- pacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program made its first dona- tion April 23 by providing 100 meals to Brookside Community Church’s Brookside Emergency Care Fund, which delivers food to families in the IPS School 54 area. “We realize that families in our local com- munity are in crisis and food pantries are struggling to keep up with demand,” stated Kevin Rider, who owns divvy with his wife, Richelle. “Our hope, along with our partners, is that we are able to provide a little bit of relief to our neighbors during this uncertain time.” A $15 donation covers breakfast and lunch for an adult or two days of breakfast, lunch and snacks for children. The meals include fresh fruits and vegetables. Local church food pantries will distribute the meals, which will be prepared by divvy. Feeding Neighbors has raised approximately $20,000, but dona- tions are welcome to continue the initiative. For more information on donating, email info@feedingneighbors.org. Rider also owns Woody’s Library Restau- rant on Main Street and is a member of the Carmel City Council. City of Carmel Petitioner By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Jo Read Trakimas will be remembered for many contributions to the arts world. Trakimas, 75, died in her sleep April 17 after a bat- tle with metastatic breast cancer. “Jo Read Trakimas is forever woven into the story of arts and culture in central Indiana — through her commitment and contributions on Voice teacher Trakimas leaves legacy IN MEMORIAM Trakimas stage and off as a participant, advocate and volunteer and as a beloved teacher, coach, mentor and friend,” Arts Council of Indianapolis President/CEO Julie Goodman said. “Jo inspired and influenced so many artists who have had a major impact on the growth and vibrancy of Indy’s arts scene and beyond.” Trakimas was a private voice teacher in Carmel for more than 38 years before retiring. Actors Theatre of Indiana co-founder Don Farrell said Trakimas was always supportive. “She was a marvelous lady, very talented and very smart,” Farrell said. “She would come to our shows and we would talk af- terward. We would meet for coffee. She was very complimentary and also gave good, constructive criticism as well.” Trakimas grew up in Memphis and Farrell is from Roswell, Ga. “My mother is a Southern lady, too. I always feel if I had a surrogate mother here in Indiana, she would be it,” he said. “I shared with her personal stories that I didn’t share with many people, especially during difficult times in my life.” Farrell said when he was in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s “Into the Woods,” he and Trakimas discussed the Stephen Sondheim musical. Trakimas’ son, Ben Wright, originated the role of Jack in “Into the Woods” on Broadway. Her survivors include her husband, Wil- liam Trakimas; daughter Shelbi George; sons Elliot Read and Ben Wright; eight grandchil- dren; and brother William T. “Ted” Mayhall. Goodman said the Arts Council of India- napolis is honored to donate its services to help Trakimas’ family with the creation of the Jo Read Trakimas Legacy Arts Fund. “One-hundred percent of all contributions will directly support emerging artists and/or local arts organizations and theaters in cen- tral Indiana that were near and dear to Jo,” Goodman said. “The family will determine the exact focus of the fund in the coming weeks but endowing an annual fellowship grant for an emerging artist in her honor or a series of contributions to local arts organizations are among the options being considered.” A celebration of her life will be held for friends and family at a later date. 31May 5, 2020Current in Carmelwww.currentincarmel.comNIGHT & DAY A Crunch Bismark doughnut and a plain glazed doughnut from Rise’n Roll. (Photo by Anna Skinner) Middlebury famous for its cinnamon caramel doughnut. A location recently opened in Fishers District, and I thought I’d give it a go. I ordered one cinnamon caramel dough- nut, one Crunch Bismark doughnut and a pack of three cowboy cookies. I arrived, paid and ate one cookie in the car. It was amazing. Upon arriving home, I realized I had been given a plain glazed doughnut instead of a cinnamon caramel crunch. I ate it, and it was good, but I remind everyone to check their bags before rushing home to stuff their face with doughnuts. I did not call the bakery, but I’m sure if I had, they would have remedied the situation. That said, I definitely would return to Rise’n Roll because I still haven’t tried that famous cinnamon caramel doughnut.
