TRAVEL Secrets of a Naples Museum Commentary by Don Knebel The National Museum of Archaeology in Naples, Italy, contains the world’s finest collection of art from nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Throughout much of the museum’s history, access to some of its most famous pieces was severely limited. In 1734, Spanish forces led by 18-year-old Charles of Bourbon captured Naples from the Austrians and Charles became king of Naples. He brought to Naples an extraordi- nary collection of ancient Roman sculptures he inherited from his mother, a member of the House of Farnese, an influential Italian family whose members included Pope Paul III. The collection contained the “Farnese Bull,” the largest ancient sculpture ever recovered; the “Farnese Atlas,” the oldest known statue of Atlas holding up the celes- tial sphere; and the “Farnese Hercules,” a copy of a Greek work that gave rise to the familiar image of Hercules. Charles support- ed excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii and ordered that the finest frescoes, mosa- ics and bronzes from those sites be brought to Naples. When Charles became King of Spain in 1759, his son, King Ferdinand, as- sembled his father’s collections in what had once been a Naples cavalry barracks. What was originally known as the Royal Bourbon Museum included erotic frescoes and statues recovered from brothels and private homes in Pompeii and Herculaneum. These items were sequestered in the mu- seum’s Secret Cabinet (Gabinetto Segreto), where they could be viewed only with per- mission from the king. After the short-lived Revolution of 1848, the Bourbons, fearing that knowledge of their collection of erotica would suggest their depravity, stopped allowing outside access to the Secret Cab- inet. Later regimes occasionally opened the doors for select visitors. In April 2000, the museum, now under national control, opened the Secret Cabinet to the general public, with children under 14 allowed only if accompanied by an adult. “Farnese Bull” in National Museum of Archaeology in Naples, Italy (Photo by Don Knebel) Public Notice of Sale The following will be sold for charges. Petitioner: City of Carmel DISPATCHES Clean up broken glass — During holiday decorating, fragile glass ornaments can easily get broken. One easy way to pick up tiny broken glass shards is to cover the area with a slice of bread and press down lightly. The spongy surface of the bread will pick even tiny pieces of glass, clearing the area safely. Warm air rises to the ceiling and the clockwise spin will push that warm air back down. Source: PioneerSettler.com Ice, ice, baby: Lemons are lavish, but ice is mandatory for a refreshing sip. Well, more bad news: Ice contamination is no joke. A 2017 study published in the Journal of En- vironmental Health found that when hands were contaminated with E. coli, the bacteria were transferred to ice 100 percent of the time. Incredibly, up to 67 percent of bacteria were transferred to ice from hands, and 83 percent from scoops. Again, the contami- nation from ice, like lemons, probably isn’t going to send you to the hospital. But bet- ter safe than sorry. Underinflated tires have higher rolling resis- tance, causing your engine to work harder and waste almost $600 a year in gas. Spend a few dollars for a tire pressure gauge and check tire pressure every month.
