Dear Mr. Shestak and Councilperson Nelson,
I am writing to express my concern with the Family Express gas station proposed for 131st and Towne Road. I am
staunchly opposed to the building of this in our community.
Given gas stations on Michigan and Meridian and on Towne and 86th, not to mention north of us in Westfield, the
convenience is minimal and outweighed by the negative impacts. These negative impacts are considerable and
include:
1. Esthetic impact—I believe Carmel is over-developed, but at this time the development has been attractive and
even beautiful. A gas station is never attractive.
2. Financial impact—the presence of a gas station at this location will depress home values in the vicinity.
3. Health impact—the health risks of benzene and gasoline are well known. Given the considerable pollution that
Carmel residents face from low air quality, pesticides, herbicides and emissions, I feel the very least we can do is
avoid introducing a pollution pumping vendor in our midst.
4. Risk—The success of this venture is far from certain. When it fails, we will be left with an ugly, polluted site
with environmental impacts too expensive for other businesses to undertake.
This is the wrong move for West Carmel. What we really need here are more city services—a decently sized library,
a community center, pick-up athletic facilities, or destination dining. Our upscale community should avoid this gas
station indefinitely.
