More specifically, the requested capacity review is for the new built-up wood beams that support the roof framing for the proposed 14ft± x 28ft± outdoor structure. Information for the proposed roof beams was provided on a drawing #18.227 for the project, submitted by Aspen Outdoor Designs, dated September 25, 2020. Mr. Blake Herbst, the designer at Aspen Outdoor Designs was consulted to provide firsthand information for the project. The following is a description of our findings and recommendations: Proposed Structure: Per drawing Detail “A” - STRUCTURE (Framing Plan), (8) 3-ply, 2x12 horizontal wood beams are shown to support the roof framing for the proposed outdoor structure. The (8) subject beams vary in length with a maximum span that appears to be 14.5ft± between column centerlines. It was suggested that all of the new beams shall be (3) built-up plies of Southern Pine, No. 1 grade lumber. The new beams are reported to support top-bearing 2x8 rafters and joists spaced at 16”oc, and a sloped sheathing with shingle roofing material. The beams are shown to be supported by perimeter 6x6 wood posts at the beam ends. The drawings indicate the new structure will be located adjacent to the existing residence; however it was reported to not be positively connected to the existing structure. Building Code and Assumptions: Applicable Codes: The following items were reviewed for minimum conformance with the 2020 Indiana Residential Code (IRC 2020) amendments to the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC 2018) Mr. Blake Herbst Engineering Investigation Wickman Residence – Beam Design 14429 Pemberton Lane Carmel, IN September 28, 2020 Page 2 20-93-AOD-BH-REPORT - FRAMING - Beam Design Assumptions: The following is a list of design assumptions utilized for the beam design review: 1. Beam Information & Construction: The maximum beam span = 14.5ft, center-center of columns. All beams shall be constructed of (3) plies of Southern Pine, No. 1 grade lumber. All plies shall be continuous full length – no splices. The plies shall be fitted tightly together – no gaps. Fasten plies together with (3) rows of 0.131dx3” nails at 12”oc. – each ply. Nails to be 2” clear from ends and 1” from top & bottom edges. 2. Beam Loading: The beams were reviewed only for the various code prescribed vertical loading combinations. The beams shall be supported and only top-loaded by 3::12 pitched roof rafters and ceiling joists attached at 16”oc. For the review, the tributary roof loading on the beam was 7ft+1.5ft± overhang. 3. Beam Bearing: The minimum beam end bearing shall be 1.5inches. The individual ply end lengths shall be staggered as required to provide full end bearing on the supporting columns. 4. Design Review Limitations: The design review was limited to only the design of the beam for the length and end bearing requirements, and for the tributary loading conditions as described above. The review does not include the review or approval of any other portion of the design of the proposed structure, including but not limited to the following: a. Rafter and Ceiling Joists or associated connections b. Beam-Column and/or beam splice connections c. Column or Foundation designs and/or connections d. Lateral stability of the proposed structure or interconnection/effects on the existing structure Conclusion: Calculations were completed per the above listed loadings, limitations, parameters and per the listed assumptions. From the information provided, the proposed 3-ply 2x12 roof beams are adequate to support the suggested loading conditions reviewed for this application. Construction Note: It is recommended that any construction or repair work be completed utilizing the industry standards, guidelines, techniques and appropriate materials for the work at hand. All work shall be completed per the Indiana Residential Code (IRC) and all applicable state and local building codes, and standards. Note: The design review capacities are based on calculations that included the above listed conditions and assumptions. If further verification of the assumptions is deemed necessary for clarification, or if the described conditions were determined to differ, then further investigation may be required. The opinions and recommendations provided in this report are based on the reported information and any supplemental documents provided for the review. If any of the described conditions were to change or if additional information or evidence were to become available, further review may be required and the conclusions rendered may be different than those provided in this report. The opinions and conclusions expressed are not a guarantee or service warranty of any kind, implied or otherwise.
