What an
adorkable
jerkface
GRAMMAR GUY
Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt
The 21st century is an uncharted land-
scape of post-postmodernism. Truth can be
whatever we want it to be at any given mo-
ment — or whatever.
It’s up to you.
After consulting
with a handful of the top dictionaries (in-
cluding Merriam-Webster, the Oxford English
Dictionary, the Macmillan Dictionary, dictio-
nary.com and Oxford Dictionaries), I have
found the following word entries in at least
one of them. After all, dictionaries don’t de-
cide which words are words — they simply
report on which words are being used out
in the wild. Here’s the unbelievable list.
• Adorkable — This word made it into
the OED’s latest addition of words in
December 2020. It’s an adjective that
means “unfashionable or socially awk-
ward in a way regarded as appealing
or endearing.”
• Adulting — This means “to behave like
an adult” or “to do adult things.”
• Ain’t. — Ain’t is a versatile word. Some-
how it can be a contraction meaning
“am not,” “are not,” “is not,” “have not”
or “has not.” Although it is still consid-
ered nonstandard English, the word
“ain’t” is like the Swiss Army knife of
Southern slang.
• Bro hug — A “bro hug” is a hug be-
tween two dudes.
• Jerkface — This word is an impolite
way to refer to an annoying person.
When I hear someone yell, “Hey jerk-
face!” in public, I assume they are try-
ing to get my attention.
• Selfie — The “selfie” is a noun that means
“the photo someone takes of themself.”
• Zhuzh — To “zhuzh” something is to make
something more stylish or appealing.
Like it or not, these words (and more) are
in our dictionaries. It’s up to you whether or
not you use them. If you’re not happy about
it, please don’t unfriend me (“unfriend” is
totes in the dictionary, by the way).

Save time doing dishes — The easiest way to save time, water and money in the kitch-
en is to stop pre-rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. You could be
making matters worse by causing the built-in soil sensor to misread the amount of dirt
in the water. Most dishwashers sold in the last five years have such a sensor. If you’re
skeptical, try scraping off extra food and putting dishes straight into the dishwasher
and see what happens.

Sorting out confusion on
Rome’s Palatine Hill
Commentary by Don Knebel
Palatine Hill, the centermost of Rome’s
famous seven hills, contains the ruins of an-
cient structures whose similar
names often confuse modern
visitors.
During Rome’s Republican era, Palatine
Hill was the home of Rome’s most prosper-
ous citizens. In 27 B.C., after Octavian had
defeated forces loyal to Mark Anthony and
Cleopatra, the Roman Senate proclaimed
him emperor, with the title “Augustus.” He
built his official residence on Palatine Hill.
The ruins of that relatively modest home
are today open to the public and called “Do-
mus Augustini” (House of Augustus). Later
emperors, also given the title Augustus,
followed Octavian’s lead and built their
palaces on Palatine Hill, effectively making
it the heart of the Roman Empire. Domitian,
who became Roman emperor in A.D. 81, built
a magnificent palace on Palatine Hill over-
looking the Circus Maximus and the Roman
Forum. Also used by Domitian’s successors,
the palace, the vast ruins of which also are
open to the public, became known as “Do-
mus Augustana” (House of the Emperor).
During his 15-year reign, Domitian built
two fields that also often bear confusing
names. In Campus Martius (Field of Mars),
Domitian erected a 250-meter-long stadium
that seated up to 30,000 spectators. Dedi-
cated in A.D. 86, the elongated facility was
used for athletic competitions and called
“Circus Argonalis” (Competition Arena). To-
day, the interior of what is often called “Sta-
dio di Domiziano” (Stadium of Domitian) lies
entirely beneath Piazza Navona, the largest
public square in Rome. Just to the east of
his palace, Domitian built a 146-meter-long
field, surrounded by a two-story colonnaded
portico. The exact purpose of what is often
also referred to as “Stadio di Domiziano”
remains unclear. It may have been used
primarily as Domitian’s private garden. To
prevent confusion with Circus Argonalis, the
field is sometimes called simply “Stadium
on Palatine Hill.”
