Hello,
I am writing to show my support of the Unified Development Ordinance amendment that if approved will require
a 500 foot
public health safety zone between new gas stations and residential homes, senior care facilities, and schools.
It is shocking to me that Carmel has set its standards for the public safety zone at 80 feet, which is less than
the 300 feet required in the Unincorporated areas of Hamilton country.
I am very concerned about benzene exposure from close proximity to gas stations. Here in Indiana, our gas
pumps do not have fail safe mechanisms to prevent gas spillage from the nozzles. Our “protection” is
distance.
As a cancer nurse for 40 years, I am very familiar with the carcinogenic effects of benzene exposure. Let's not
expose Carmel residents to more Benzene by allowing gas stations in close proximity to our residents!
Please vote in favor of the amendment to the UDO to require 500 feet between gas stations and homes,
schools, and senior facilities.
Thank you.
