Dear Commissioners,
I am writing to strongly urge each of you to approve the amendment to the Carmel UDO (Unified Development
Ordinance) to reflect the proposed 500’ public health safety zone between new gas stations and residential properties,
senior care facilities, and schools.
I have been a physician for over 20 years and a lung specialist for 16 years. Anything we can do as a city and community
as an “ounce of prevention” to avoid inducing disease, such as cancer, and minimize worsening diseases, such as COPD
(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma in vulnerable populations, is well worth it.
In addition, gas stations do not belong anywhere near residential properties, senior care facilities, or schools. They serve
no purpose in those areas; Carmel has plenty of gas stations to choose from currently. This amendment does not
preclude future gas stations from being built if someone feels compelled to build them. Rather, it attempts to focus
future building efforts to the safest areas possible.
Please vote to approve the amendment.
Sincerely,
Heather Misra, MD
