Dear Commissioners,
It may have already been brought to your attention that a number of compounds injurious to human health
are released from gas stations during vehicle fueling and from the underground storage thank vents, the most
harmful one being benzene. The current research documents have shown that benzene can be detected at a
distance of more than 500 feet from a gas station.
Please approve the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) amendment to reflect 500 ft public health safety
zone between new gas stations and residential homes, schools and senior care facilities.
Having grown up in a heavily polluted and populated area, we both have first hand experience of the
devastating effects of unhealthy air on health and wellbeing. One of the great benefits we see of living in
Carmel is it’s safe, clean environment along with a great infrastructure in which to raise our children. And we
both strongly believe that anything which can be done to increase and maintain the safety for all Carmel
residents and families is well worth it.
We urge you to approve this amendment to keep all the families in Carmel safe.
Thank You for your time!
With regards,
Charu Ojha and Sajeev Uprety
