March1998
The Carmel Arts Council was formed in 1993 and presently has a volunteer working Board of Directors and one part time paid staff member,
Doreen Squire Ficara, the Executive Director. The Mission is "To support the arts in the City of Carmel and Clay Township, by increasing
awareness, encouraging interest, developing, accessing, and achieving excellence in the performing and visual arts."
Children's Art Gallery
On January 17, 1998, the Carmel Arts Council's Children's Art Gallery, at 30 W. Main Street in Carmel, was formally opened with an exhibit
of art work by students, kindergarten to eighth grade, from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Maria Goretti Schools. The gallery will be open October
through May yearly. All area schools will be invited to show art work; at least two schools will be showing each month. Viewing hours are
Sundays, 2.4 p.m. Groups by appointment (844.4989). (CAC thanks Ameritech for their help in staffing the galleryviewing hours.)
The CAC Children's Gallery is the smallest in the country (quite possibly the world!) featuring children's art works exclusively -
Art Calendars
In April 1997 the Carmel Arts Council sponsored an art contest in the Carmel public schools. One entry was chosen from each grade for a
printed calendar which also listed various community art events along with contact names and addresses of local art organizations. CHS Senior
Rachel Sunderland's painting was selected for the front cover of the 1998 CAC "inaugural" calendar and subsequently purchased for display at the
gallery. This purchase prize will be used each year to expand the gallery's permanent works. The calendar was sold at various Carmel locations.
Plans are underway for the 1999 calendar.
The 1998 calendar was made possible through a $1,500 grant from the Legacy Fund Community Foundation. Ameritech Hometown Partners
Program has given the CAC $1500 towards the printing of the 1999 calendar.
Scholarships
Ameritech Hometown Partners Program has also awarded the CAC $1,000 which wil' be used for two $500 scholarships for CHS graduating
seniors, one in the visual arts and one in the performing arts. These will be presented in May 1998
Acknowledgements
The Carmel Arts Council gratefully acknowledges the generous support of local businesses, corporations, government entities, and community
foundations. The generosity of Ameritech, the Legacy Fund, City of Carmel Mayor's Office, Carmel City Councilors, Carmel Clay Chamber of
Commerce, LIN Printing, and O'Malia's Food Markets, has enabled the CAC to support the arts in many ways throughout the community. Thanks
also to the Carmel News Tribune and the Indianapolis Star Metro North office for their excellent news coverage.
