HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC-06-01-92-02 Non-Smoke Areas RESOLUTION CC-6-1-92-2 A RESOLUTION TO ENCOURAGE NON-SMOKING AREAS IN ALL RESTAURANTS IN CARMEL, INDIANA WHEREAS, the majority of Americans do not smoke; and WHEREAS, the City of Camel, Indiana presently prohibits smoking in some public areas and buildings; and, WHEREAS, the dangers of second hand smoking have been documented; and, WHEREAS, some restaurants in Camel designate minimal or no areas in which tobacco smoking is prohibited; and, WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Carmel believes it is in the best interests of all citizens of Carmel to have a reasonable area in each restaurant designated for non-smokers, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the ~ommon Council'of the City of Carmel, Indiana that the following requests are made of all restaurants doing business in the City of Carmel: Each restaurant should provide areas designated specifically as non-smoking. II. These non-smoking areas should constitute at least 50% of the restaurant' s dining area. III. Non-smoking should refer to all cigarette, pipe, cigar and other burning tobacco leaf products. A restaurant is defined, for the purposes of this Resolution, as any business establishment which sells food for consumption on its premises and provides any number of tables and chairs for that purpose. It is the intent of the Common Council to exclude, for the purposes of this Resolution, any area within such an establishment where a bar, serving alcoholic beverages, is in full view of, and is an integral part of, the dining area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Carmel, Indiana that window decals shall be designed and printed that indicate a restaurant is participating with the City of Carmel by designating at least 50% of its dining area to be set aside for non-smokers. These decals shall be designed and printed using the promotional fund available to the Common Council. Decals shall be provided to any restaurant in the City of Camel that complies with all of the provisions of this Resolution. One decal shall be provided for each entrance to the restaurant.
