Carmel Board of Zoning Appeal Members:
We are writing this letter in regards to the proposed apartments at 11335 N.
Michigan Road. We have been residents of the Woodhaven neighborhood
immediately to the north of the proposed development for over 30 years. During
this time we have seen significant development along the Michigan Road
Corridor. This development is continuous from 96th Street north to beyond 116th
street. The southwest corner of the intersection of 116th St. and Michigan Road
is going to be developed in the near future. Must every parcel of land along
Michigan Road be paved or have a building on it? There are already a
substantial number of apartments and businesses along this corridor. There
comes a point when this uninterrupted continuous development actually
decreases the quality of life for the residents of this area. The land in question
where these apartments are proposed has been for many years occupied by a
relatively small landscaping company (Altum’s). With two ponds, grasses, and
woods on this property it has become somewhat of a wildlife refuge. It has
served as a pleasant break from all of the development. In the interest of
maintaining the quality of life for the residents of this area, would you please
consider keeping this parcel of land as a wildlife refuge/ park area. Developers
will occupy every square foot if given the chance. Their main concern is making
money, not the quality of life of the community. The City of Carmel has
demonstrated a concern for that quality of life throughout the City. The residents
surrounding this proposed development need that long term vision and concern
to be manifested in this case. The development as proposed with its numerous
variances is not conducive to the quality of life that we have come to expect living
on the west side of the City of Carmel. We respectfully ask that you deny this
development as presented.
