An Application and Description of the Proposed Use of the Grant Funds
APPLICANT:
Name of organization: Indianapolis Opera
Address: 4011 N. Pennsylvania Street
Indianapolis, IN 46205
Telephone: (317) 283-3531 Fax:
Contact Person: David Craig Starkey
APPLICATION AMOUNT: $ $12,000
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED USE OF THE GRANT FUNDS:
The Indianapolis Opera respectfully requests support from the City of Carmel Arts Grant Program to
subsidize the additional cost of performing an original, fully staged professional opera production at The Tarkington
at the Center for the Performing Arts. We would like to increase our request to $12,000 due to rising costs of
labor, theatre rental charges, and marketing/advertising which have been impacted by the rise in inflation.
The Indianapolis Opera (10) brings passion, excitement, and the art of opera to Indiana as its only
professional opera company, and our central location is ideal for delivering unique artistic experiences to people of
all ages, creeds, racial and ethnic groups, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are committed to
bringing high -quality opera and vocal music to Indiana, nurturing the careers of culturally diverse, emerging
professional artists, and enriching lives with an emphasis on culture through education and outreach. Our mission
is to educate, inspire and entertain through the creation and presentation of musical storytelling for our
diverse Hoosier community, and we are proud to be a unique cultural resource by showcasing operas that
share stories of the world, performed by artists from every nation of the world through our mainstage series and
by delivering artistic experiences statewide through our educational programming.

Continued)
The Indianapolis Opera's aspiration for artistic excellence draws leadership, artists, and staff to the
organization's core values, and these core values are connected and influenced by three overarching
beliefs that support our mission and vision for the organization. First, the human voice is the greatest form
of expression. Second, the state is a forum for community engagement and communication. Finally,
storytelling defines our humanity. These overarching beliefs inform our commitment to bringing new
experiences and insightful storytelling to Indiana, and we are committed to expanding our reach to
communities and audiences throughout the state.
Our productions and educational programming remain nimble in responding to community needs in an ever -
changing environment, and as the Indianapolis Opera approaches its 50- anniversary season in 2025, we
are dedicated to advancing the passion, excitement, and the art of opera in our city, state, and region. The
1O's upcoming 2022-2023 season will feature new repertory and talent, and the organization is tentatively
considering the work of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca in the Fall of 2022 at The Tarkington from November 11-
13, 2022.
A tale of love, tragedy, and political intrigue, Tosca is one of the world's most beloved operas. Based on
Victorien Sardou's dramatic 1887 play, La Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's musical score with librettists Luigi
Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa tells the story of a beautiful young opera singer who fights to save the love of
her life from a jealous and corrupt police chief. The opera features some of Puccini's most iconic music,
and it is filled with memorable (and sometimes haunting) musical motifs. Tosca is an operatic thriller that
leaves audiences at the edge of their seat throughout the entire three -act performance, and it will showcase
an incredible cast of world class singers and artists. In addition, it is our hope to feature a soprano who is
hailed as one of the world's greatest in her artistic portrayal of the title character, Tosce. (She has also
never sung at The Tarkington before, yet her performances would draw national attention.)
Ever since the Indianapolis Opera discovered that 46% of its audience travels from Carmel to experience
opera in the city of Indianapolis, we have made a conscious effort to embrace and build relationships with
this audience group. The Tarkington is the ideal space to experience intimate opera, and the existing
audience base has a deep appreciation for theatrical performances. For the past few years, the
Indianapolis Opera has made a concerted effort to increase community awareness in Carmel, especially in
outreach efforts with Current in Carmel. As a result of the 1O's community engagement efforts, we continue
to draw strong audience numbers — highlighted from our recent production of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni
20% of the households that purchased tickets were new households from Carmel. The Indianapolis
Opera is committed to the continued growth and development of our relationship with The Tarkington and
the City of Carmel, and by bringing world class operas to The Tarkington each year, the City of Carmel can
promote the world class performing arts offerings presented at both The Palladium and The Tarkington.

INDIANA
November 29, 2021
City of Carmel
Office of the Mayor
Attn: Mayor Jim Brainard
One Civic Square
Carmel, IN 46032
Dear Mayor Brainard,
IS OPERA
DICE. A STAGE. A STORY.
On behalf of the Indianapolis Opera, we are submitting our grant proposal for the year of 2022 for a
mainstage opera production at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts on November 11-13,
2022. We would like to share a brief year-end report with you (EXHIBIT G).
We are grateful for your support and understanding in allowing us to apply the City of Carmel Arts Grant
funding awarded in January 2020 to our fall 2021 production out of concern for both performers and patrons
due to the pandemic and CDC guidelines for physical distancing. Through the funds provided by the City
of Carmel in 2020, the Indianapolis Opera successfully held three performances of Don Giovanni at The
Tarkington on November 5, 6, and 7 with a budget of $130,600. Your generous $8,000 grant was applied
to subsidizing the theatre rental and marketing costs. You can see the marketing efforts translated into
growing ticket sales with 20% of ticket sales from new households in Carmel. The performances were very
well received, and enthusiastic audience feedback included "I have seen Don Giovanni six times, and this
production was my favorite!" and "The costumes and music were exquisite! The vocalists were
phenomenal!"
It was an honor to present our opera production at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts,
especially after an unprecedented year that significantly impacted live performances. It is our desire to
reapply because we truly believe that we were successful in all aspects of our production, including
marketing, ticket sales, and audience response.
With acceptance of your grant, we wish to apply the funds of $12,000 to continue expanding our audience
base in Carmel and Hamilton County. Along with expanding our education offerings in the region, we would
like to increase students' exposure to Italian and French cultures, classical literature, theater, and music.
Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to successfully partnering with the City of Carmel in
the coming year.
Sincerely,
D.J C--, As
