HomeMy WebLinkAboutLetter #02 Edward & Tara MoyDear City of Carmel,
We are writing you in support of the construction project at 13108 Harrison Drive, Carmel, IN
46033. The Alhassoon’s have chosen to add a small deck and a small portico onto the front of
the house, and that choice has led to them filing for a variance so that they may complete the
project. Our understanding is that the allowed allowance for encroachment on the front yard is
10’, but their plan as the deck at 7’. We live in Brookshire Lakes as well and see the
Alhassoon’s house and the partial construction of their desired deck/portico every day. Their
deck/portico/pergola is relatively unassuming but adds a dimension of charm to their home.
Brookshire Lakes contains very few front porches that invite residents to say hello, chat, and
maybe even sit for a moment as they go about their lives. Many people in our neighborhood
don’t spend much time in front of their homes, and those that do often sit in their garages
because the porch isn’t an option. Porches contain the promise of community and provide the
opportunity for those informal interactions that can make a community strong. Whenever we
see a new porch constructed in Brookshire Lakes, we discuss whether we could add a similar
feature to our own home because it makes the home seem welcoming and inviting.
In conclusion, we support the Alhassoon’s desire to make the front of their home more inviting
to the themselves and to the community. As the homes in Brookshire Lakes did not incorporate
an inviting front porch in the original plans, the only way for many homes in Brookshire Lakes
(including the Alhassoon’s home) to have this feature is to apply for a variance that will allow
space for a porch. Please approve their variance application. They are not the only ones in the
neighborhood who wish to improve the inviting, community feel of the neighborhood.
Sincerely,
Edward and Tara Moy
