NOTICE to SWIMMING POOL'CONTRACTORS

The state of Indiana adopted the National Electrical Code 2005 in October of2005.
The NEC received some minor amendments from the state and was re-named the
Indiana Electrical Code.
The Indiana Swimming Pool Code was adopted in October 200 I and governs all requirements for swimming
pools.
In accordance with the swimming pool code;
675 lAC 20-4-22 Electrical requirements,
Sec. 22 states that the electrical shall be installed in accordance with 675 lAC 17, which is the Indiana Electrical
Code (2005 NEC).

You MAY NOT use the electrical requirements of the Indiana Residential Code for electrical installation for
pools, hot tubs, spas, etc:
.A new requirementofthe electrical code is to install an EquipotentialBonding Grid. 3 feet out from the
walls ofthe pool under the .pool deck. '

IEC 680.26 (5) (C) Equipotential Bonding Grid. The parts specified in 680.26 (B) shall be connected to an;
equipotential bonding grid with a solid copper conductor, insulated, covered, or bare, not smaller than 8 A WG or
rigid metal conduit of brass or other identified corrosion-resistant metal conduit. Connection shall be madJ by
exothermic welding or by listed pressure connectors or clamps that are labeled as being suitable for the purJ,ose
and are of stainless steel, brass, copper, or copper alloy. The equipotential common bonding grid shall extend
under paved walking surfaces for I m (3 ft) horizontally beyond the inside walls of the pool and shall he
permitted to be any of the following:
(1) Structural Reinforcing Steel. The structural reinforcing steel of a concrete pool where the reinforcing'
rods are bonded together by the usual steel tie wires or the equivalent
(2) Bolted or Welded Metal Pools. The walls of a bolted or welded metal pool
(3) Alternate Means. This system shall be permitted to be constructed as specified in (a) through (c):
a. Materials and Connections. The grid shall be constructed of minimum 8 A WG bare solid copper
conductors. Conductors' shall be bonded to each other at all points of crossing. Connection shall
be. made as required by 680.26 (D).
b. Grid Structure. The equipotential bonding grid shall cover the contour of the pool and pool deck
extending I m (3 ft) horizontally from the inside walls of the pool. The equipotential bonding
grid shall be arranged in a 300 mm (12in.) by 300 mm (12 in.) network of conductors in a
uniformly spaced perpendicular grid pattern with tolerance of 100 mm (4in.). .
c. Securing. The below-grade grid shall be secured within or under the pool and deck media..
The City ofCar:mel Building and Code Services will be inspecting for the new bonding grid during the pool
inspections. This added requirement of the bonding inspection may require an additional inspection with the
standard inspection fee IF the grid is n~t in place during the normal bonding inspection. I
IF the required equipotential bonding grid under.the deck is not inspected and approved prior to the deck sLface
being installed the deck surface must be removed to veri fy the grid is in place. . I
