EXPLANATION
The applicant, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (hereafter "Holy Trinity"), is
the owner of a twenty (20) acre parcel of Real Estate located at the northeast comer of
106th Street and Shelbome Road. The subject Real Estate is zoned S-1 and, under the S-1
zoning classification, a church is a permitted special use.
Holy Trinity was established in Indianapolis in 1910, and has existed in its present
location at 40th and Pennsylvania Streets in Indianapolis since the 1950s. In order to
become closer in proximity to its parishioners, Holy Trinity has decided to relocate to this
twenty (20) acre parcel of land which it originally purchased in 1998. As a result, Holy
Trinity desires to construct a new church possessing a total of approximately 65,000
square feet. The church will be constructed in two (2) phases, as shown on the colored
site plan under tab 3 of this brochure. Phase One comprises approximately 39,000 square
feet, and will consist of the sanctuary and worship area, administrative offices, nursery
and preschool rooms, a library, and meeting rooms. The sanctuary will seat a
congregation of 500. Phase Two is comprised of approximately 25,600 square feet, and
it will consist of large and small meeting halls, a kitchen and storage areas. Phase Two
will be constructed sometime in the future when church finances permit.
In order to construct the new church, Holy Trinity must obtain (i) a special use
approval and (ii) a developmental standards variance approval. The special use approval
is necessary in order to permit the construction of the church. The developmental
standards variance approval is necessary in order to permit the height of the church
building to exceed thirty five feet (35), the maximum permitted under the S-1 zoning
classification. The diagrams shown under tab 8 of this brochure illustrate the portions of
the building that exceed thirty five (35) feet in height. The gold area of each diagram
represents zero to thirty five (35) feet in height and, consequently, portions of the
building above the gold area exceed thirty five (35) feet. As you can see in looking at the
diagram for each elevation under tab 8, it is primarily the dome and certain portions of
the roof which exceed thirty five (35) feet. The dome crowns the temple, which is central
to the Greek Orthodox Church worship service.
Included under tab 9 is a design narrative and colored elevations of the church
which illustrate the Byzantine architecture incorporated into the overall design of the
church. The overall design and architecture for the proposed church were created by
Christ Kamages, a nationally renowned architect from San Francisco that specializes in
Byzantine architecture.
We look forward to presenting these special use and developmental standards
variance requests to the Board of Zoning Appeals on May 22, 2006.

FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONS
INTENDED USE -Ideal for use in car lots, street lighting or parking areas.
CONSTRUCTION - Rugged, .063" thick, aluminum rectilinear housing.
Continuously seam welded for weather-tight seal and integrity.
Naturally anodized, extruded, aluminum doorframe with mitered cor-
ners is retained with (twol.1BB" diameter hinge pins and secured with
(onel quarter-turn, quick release fastener. Weatherproof seal between
housing and door frame is accomplished with an integrally designed,
extruded silicone gasket that snaps into door frame.
FINISH -' Standard finish is dark bronze (DDS) polyester powder. Other
powder architectural colors available.
OPTICAL SYSTEM - Reflectors are anodized and segmented for superior
uniformity and control, which allows the flexibility to mix distributions
without compromising the overall lighting job. Reflectors attach
with tool-less fasteners and are rotatable and interchangeable.Three
cutoff distributions available: Type II (Roadway). Type III (Asymmet-
ric). Type IV (Forward Throw, Sharp Cutoff).
Lens is .125" thick, impact-resistant, tempered, glass with thermally-
applied, silk screened power door shield.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - High reactance, high power factor ballast for
lOOW. Constant-wattage autotransformer ballast. Removable power
door and positive locking disconnect plug for l50-250W. Super CWA
Pulse Start ballast required for 200W (must order SCWA option). All
ballasts are copper- wound and 100% factory-tested.
Porcelain, horizontally-oriented, socket with copper alloy, nickel-
plated screw shell and center contact. Medium-base socket used
with lOOW and l50W, mogul-base socket used with 1 75-250W. UL
listed l500W-600V.
INSTALLATION - Extruded, 4" aluminum arm for pole orwall mounting is
shipped in fixture carton. Optional mountings available.
LISTING - UL listed for wet locations. Listed and labeled to comply with
Canadian Standards (see Options).

The new Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Carmel belongs to
a centrally organized prototype with 2000 years of theological
history and 1400 years of architectural roots.
The inspiration for the Holy Trinity complex comes from the villages
of Greece and the picturesque monasteries of Mount Athos (the
Great Holy Mount in northern Greece). Holy Trinity's village-like
environment, with a variety of roof heights and building massings,
is reminiscent of these Greek villages.
The plaza and courtyards are interlaced with the building's
functional components defined by loggias and arcades. These
connect inside and out, while making public and intimately scaled
spaces at the same time.
The crowning jewel of the complex is God's House - the Church
Temple. The temple is crowned with a Gold Dome that is made of
prismatically-charged, golden stainless steel painted with an
iridescent surface.
The remaining roof and building compositions step down to a
humble and more residential scale, with variegated, gently sloped
roof surfaces comprised of asphalt, metal and clay tile with terra
cotta and earth tones.
The materials and colors applied for the complex are tied to
Indiana's rich masonry and limestone heritage. The walls are
comprised of a collage of red, terra cotta and buff brick, limestone
and cast stone accents. The color palette reflects a combination of
materials and colors familiar and complementary to Carmel while in
the same time rooted in Byzantium and Greece.
