CITY OF CARMEL
URBAN FORESTRY
SPECIES RECOMMENDATIONS
This list is provided as a guide to the most appropriate species for tree plantings in urban areas.
There is no single perfect tree; the most successfiul course is to match the planting site limitations with
the right tree for that spot. Each site must be evaluated and possible res trictions of tree species noted.
These restrictions include rooting space, sari texture, soil pH, drainage, exposure, overhead wires and
surroundh1g building su rfaces.
The trees appearing on this list have different requirements and tolerances. All of these species
should do well in the urban forest environment of Carmel. Before selecting any particular species or
variety further research should be done to ensure that the site would satisfy the specific requirements
of the tree. Some of the species or cultivars listed here may not be readily available at local nurseries,
particularly in cal ipers large enough for plantir1g ir1 high traffic areas. Tree staking may provide limited
protection.

tr iangle measuring 30 feet along the boundary of each of the intersecti ng
roadways, measured fro m the point of intersecting curb lines, except where
engineering sta ndards ind icate otherwise.
Absent specific approval from the City's Arborist, no Street Tree planting is
perm itted where the distance between the curb and detached sidewa lk is less
th an 5 fe et. In addition, a planting area defined by tow curbs, curb and fe nce ,
or sidewalk and fe nce must be 5 fe et wide if Street Trees are to be pla nted .
Larger maturing trees should be pl aced 35 feet apart and smaller maturing
trees 20 feet apart. The City's Arborist may req uire wider spacing if it is
necessary for development of the Tree for safe use of the street or sidewa lk.
When space is limited or to ach ieve certain desig n effects, closer spacing
may be considered .
No Street Tree shall be planted closer than 10 fe et from any private driveway
or alley.
No Street Tree other than low grow ing species that do not attain a mature
height greater than 20 feet shall be pla nted under or within 20 fe et of any
overhead power lines.
No Street Tree shall be planted so that its center is with in 10 fe et of a fi re
hydrant, water valve or ma nhole.
All plantings shall adhere to the City of Ca rme l Tree and Shrub Installation

Prepa ring the Planting Site
•Contact Holey Maley (within lndiana-HI00-382-5544) to locate any underground utilities
before you dig.
•If possible, prepare the site before you bring in the tree.
• Keep the root ball well watered and keep the tree in a shaded place until you are ready
to plant.
• It is imperative lo determine the trunk fiare on each balled and burlaped tree before the
planting site is dug so that the depth of the planting site can be properly measured.
•The trunk fiare is the point where roots beg in to branch fro m the trunk. (The top of the
root ball is not always the trunk flare .)
, Measure the height from the base of the trunk fiare to the bottom of the root ball.
, Dig to the depth of the trunk fl are.
, Dig the space at least 2 times the diameter of root ball.
• Break up com pacted soil. Sides of the planting space should not be packed. Leave the
bottom of the space firm.
•Rem ove the bottom of basket with wire cutters.
•Lift the tree into planting space by the root ball, not the trunk.
• Remove the burlap from the immediate tru nk area of the tree. (Remove top 113 of burlap
as a minim um.)
• Pull back the excess soil around the tru nk of tree to locate the trunk flare.
•The trunk flare and top of root ball should be at or slightly above grade.

Wire Basket Removal Process
•Remove the burlap from the immediate trunk area of the tree. Remove any excess soil to locate and
expose the trunk flare. /II the trunk flare ,s buried with in the root ball remove excess soil from top of ball.)
•Before the tree is placed in the planting hole, remove the bottom of the basket with wire cutters cutting the
bas ket horizontally.
•Lift the tree into the planting space by the root ball, not the trunk.
•Cut away remaining stri ngs, burlap and pl astic to expose the root ball.
•Remove the rest of the wire basket by verti cally cutting the basket and peeling the basket off.
•Do not plant the root ball too deep. The trunk flare and the top of root ball should be 1 -2" above grade.
•Beg in refi lling the planting space up to the trunk flare, watering as you refill to firmly set tree. Gently tamp.
Tree Staking Process (when necessary)
•Staking shall use either a two or three-point support system.
•Any staking mechanism should be flexible enough to allow the stem and root system to develop strength.
Attach the tree to either wood or metal stakes (2" X 2" X 6') with wide pl astic or nylon straps.
•If a guy wire/rope is used it shall be pl aced through hose material around each tree then twisted to secure
the tree in a relatively slable position.
•The strap or wi re/rope shall be secu red to each stake at an approximately right angle.
Note: Stakes must not be driven through the root ball. The guys and stakes shall be maintained for the duration of
the contract. Trees should be checked periodically to insure that the trunks are not being damaged or girdled. All
materials used to support trees shall be removed and disposed of after one year, except as otherwise directed for
trees requiring additional bracing time.
